Fake impotence drugs linked to low blood sugar outbreak

Thursday, February 12, 2009

An article in the February 12 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine reports on an unusual cause for an outbreak of low blood sugar among men in Singapore: illegal use of sexual performance enhancement drugs that were contaminated with a diabetes drug.

Between January and May 2008, 149 men and one woman between 19 and 97 (mean age 51) were admitted to five public hospitals for unexplained low blood sugar. Similar cases were reported in media reports from Hong Kong. Seven Singaporean patients remained in a coma because of prolonged sugar starvation of the brain, and four subsequently died. The diabetes drug glyburide was found in blood and/or urine samples in 85% of cases; 30% admitted having used illegal sexual performance enhancers.

The contaminated products were a counterfeit version of the drug Cialis (meant for the treatment of genuine erectile dysfunction), and three purported herbal preparation (the affected brands included Power 1 Walnut and Santi Bovine Penis Erecting Capsule). All four preparations additionally contained Viagra in varying concentrations. Two herbal products contained traces of the weight loss drug sibutramine, a compound related to amphetamines.

The drug packaging mentioned names of non-existent overseas production facilities, so the source of the contamination with the diabetes drug could not be established.

The authors underline the risks that is known to be associated with purchasing drugs from unreliable providers or from online resellers. The clandestine use of impotence drugs as sexual performance enhancers seems to have provided a good illustration of this problem. They further call for more efforts by national and international health and law enforcement agencies to curb the manufacturing, international transport and sales of untrustworthy medication.

New Jersey to consider bikini waxing ban

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Friday, March 20, 2009

New Jersey is considering a state-wide ban on Brazilian waxes, the removal of hair from the bikini area.

Although genital waxing has never really been allowed in the state, the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling plans to propose a ban with more specific legal wording, in response to two women who reported being injured during a wax. The board will consider the proposal at their next meeting on April 14.

If the measure passes, New Jersey may become the only US state to ban the practice outright.

Although millions of Americans engage in bikini waxes, which generally cost between $50 and $60 per session, the practice comes with risks. Skin care experts say the hot wax can irritate delicate skin in the bikini area, and result in infections, ingrown hairs and rashes.

Waxing on the face, neck, abdomen, legs and arms would continue to be permitted in the state under the proposed ban. Although New Jersey statutes have always banned bikini waxing, the laws were unclear and seldom enforced.

As a result, many salons from around the state have offered bikini waxing for years. Many salon owners spoke out against the proposed ban, which they said would severely damage their business.

“I really don’t know if the state can stop it at this point,” said Valentia Chistova, owner of the Monmouth County salon Brazil. “I know a lot of women who are really hooked.”

Polish drug company Jelfa ordered to shut-down over mislabelled drugs

Polish Prime Minister Jaros?aw Kaczy?ski has ordered the pharmaceutical company Jelfa to halt production following revelations that Jelfa had placed mislabelled medication on the market, whose use could be potentially fatal.

Jelfa distributed vials labelled as Corhydron, a hydrocortisone used to treat allergies and inflammation, but in fact containing Suxamethonium chloride, a drug normally used to cause muscle paralysis during emergency surgery.

The Health Ministry has appealed to people suffering from asthma or allergies to check their medication and return any Corhydron ampoules they possess to the pharmacy.

Polskie Radio reports that the mislabelling was discovered a month ago, but Jelfa and the Polish Health ministry did not inform of the problem.

Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski ordered Jelfa to halt production until it can assure the Polish Government that it can properly manage its production.

The Polish Outlook reports that that drug companies in Poland were operating unregulated since December, 2005 as the regulations has expired. The government was putting in place new regulations.

The owner of Jelfa is AB Sanitas, the largest drug producer in neighbouring Lithuania. The shut-down has been questioned by the Lithuanian Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas, who expressed concern over the situation and said that he wants to try to settle the issue diplomatically.

US Senate committee investigates credit card practices

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

On Tuesday, the United States Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs‘s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations held a hearing titled “Credit Card Practices: Unfair Interest Rate Increases.” The hearing examined the circumstances under which credit card issuers may increase the interest rates of cardholders who are in compliance with the terms of their credit cards. It was a follow-up to a March 2007 hearing.

Subcommittee Chairman Carl Levin said in his opening statement: “Today’s focus is on credit card issuers who hike the interest rates of cardholders who play by the rules — meaning those folks who pay on time, pay at least the minimum amount due, and wake up one day to find their interest rate has gone through the roof — again, not because they paid late or exceeded the credit limit, but because their credit card issuer decided they should be ‘repriced’.”

Present to testify on behalf of credit card issuers were Roger C. Hochschild of Discover Financial Services, Bruce L. Hammonds of Bank of America Corporation, and Ryan Schneider of Capital One Financial Corporation.

Much of the 90 minute hearing focused on specific cases where interest rates were raised, allegedly because credit scores of the debtor dropped, and not because they were delinquent or otherwise behind on payments. According to Levin, this practice made it so that almost all payments went towards finance charges with almost none toward repaying the principal. This, he felt, is an unfair practice, as the credit card companies were negligent in informing their customers of the rate hikes and the reason for such hikes.

Families find themselves ensnared in a seemingly inescapable web of credit card debt.

The collective credit card debt of Americans totals an estimated US$900 billion. Issuers have come under pressure to disclose their policies in regards to setting fees and interest rates. The US Truth in Lending Act requires that terms of a loan be set forth up front. Fluctuating interest rates on credit cards would, on the surface, appear to violate this act.

Roger C. Hochschild disagreed, arguing that “every card transaction is a new extension of credit … This makes it difficult — and risky — to underwrite, and price, the loan based solely on the borrower’s credit-worthiness at the time of application [for the card].”

Ryan Schneider, agreed: “The ability to modify the terms of a credit card agreement to accommodate changes over time to the economy or the credit-worthiness of consumers must be preserved.”

“Attempts to interfere with the market here … will inevitably result in less credit being offered,” warned Bruce Hammonds. “Risk-based pricing has democratized access to credit,” he added.

All three credit card executives also mentioned an ongoing Federal Reserve System review of credit card rules that already proposes a 45-day notification ahead of any rate changes.

Committee members criticized the industry for varying practices. Included in the criticism was the practice of mailing checks to card-holders, failing to notify applicants that obtaining additional cards could lower their credit score and raise their rates, and “ambushing” card-holders with raised rates.

Ranking minority member of the subcommittee, Norm Coleman said, “families find themselves ensnared in a seemingly inescapable web of credit card debt. They particularly report being saddled with interest rates that skyrocketed on them seemingly out of the blue.”

Wayne Rooney will play in Germany

Wednesday, June 7, 2006

England soccer player Wayne Rooney, 20, has been passed fit to play in the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament which starts on June 9 in Germany. The £27 million Manchester United star had a scan on Wednesday that showed the 4th metatarsal he broke on Apr 29 had healed – in less than 6 weeks.

Rooney was supposedly spotted boarding a plane to Germany while the BBC claim sources close to the Football Association indicated Rooney was in England’s final World Cup squad.

The news is considered a big boost to England’s chances to win the World Cup. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had said the player’s chances of playing were “a forlorn hope.”

The English soccer club, recently bought by American billionaire Malcolm Glazer, was concerned the investment would risk a worse injury if the previous toe-bone break had not healed when he started to play again. Manchester United’s club doctor Todd Gill and physiotherapist Rob Swire, accompanied by a small army of Red Devils’ lawyers, were said to have attended the foot scan.

The scan was considered so important to England’s fortunes that Eriksson sent England’s doctor to observe the event. A FIFA official was also present in the crowd at the moment of truth for Rooney’s foot. The official would have been final decision-maker in case of a dispute between one of the richest soccer clubs in the world and the country that invented the game.

The Swedish manager of the English football team Sven-Göran Eriksson, who had said Rooney would play some part in the competition, named Rooney in England’s 23-man squad for Germany.

The World Cup tournament pits soccer players from national teams against each other for a trophy. Previously graced by Pele and Maradona, England has not won the competition for 40 years.

We all love to display canvas prints on our walls but what if we were to get a lot o canvas prints done all at once, how would be hang them and what would be the best way to hang them to?

There many different shapes and sizes you can achieve with having individual canvas prints. You can have long canvas prints which are called panoramic canvas prints. You can have square canvas printing or you can have off square sizes. Once you have decided on what size canvas prints you want and also once you have the images you want to use then you have to decide how you would arrange them on your wall. Square canvas prints can go side by side in a line, or you can put them together so they all make up one big square shape. This is a cool way to show off square canvas prints. If you have rectangle canvas prints or panoramic canvas prints you can arrange them any way you want to, as long as you keep a similar gap between each canvas print so that they stay symmetrical to each other. That way they can look a good fit once on display o your wall.

One really cool way to show of lots of photo on a canvas print is to have a jumbo print. This basically means lots of photos on one single work of art or picture. Another saying for this is called a collage canvas print to. Its where you take lots of photos that you love and have them all displayed as individual small canvas prints next to each other or you could get one really large canvas print like a A0 size print and have all your photos printed onto that one canvas print creating a work of art collage. This is also a great way to display your canvas art prints.

If you really like to have your photos in photo frames and you really like that wood effect but you dont want a photo frame, you want something different then you could opt for a printed frame look. The printed frame look is basically a canvas print with your photo on it but what makes it look different is you have a picture frame printed around the outside of the frame making it looking like a picture frame. There are so many different styles and looks you can go for when youre choosing your picture frame and the colours to. Its really cool to see it on the wall as well as from the side it will just look like a really think looking quality picture frame but as you get closer you will be able to see that the picture frame is actually printed on the canvas which gives of such an amazing effect.

If you get a little stuck for inspiration you could always go for an instagram photo montage look with your canvas printing to. This is where you take all your intagram photos from your instagram account and put all of them on to individual canvas prints for display next to each other. The effects really good and its so easy to do to which is so amazing.

Hanging your canvas photos up the stairs. Now this has become a very new and exciting way to decorate you stair way. Lets all face it. Going up and down the stairs can be a boring part of our lives and I think we can all agree on that, But however if you fill your stairway and its walls with photos that you love of your friends and family then the journey up and down the stairs can become a fun place to be. You dont just have to have canvas prints on your walls you could have photos in photo frames, or you could have posters. Whichever you feel is the better option for your decor.
