Fujitsu launches cloud website for dog pedometer service

Japanese multinational company Fujitsu launched a website for a dog pedometer which allows customers to monitor their dog’s health online. The device measures data while attached to the dog’s collar. Customers are also able to add more data to the website manually, then it displays the complete set of data graphically. Fujitsu launched the website today (Tuesday) and plans to start the sales in Japan tomorrow (Wednesday).

The pedometer is called “Wandant”, from Japanese “Wan” equivalent to “woof”, and the “dant” of “pendant”. The latter refers to the pedometer, because it is attached to a dog collar. The users can transfer data to an Android phone using a touch-card to make it available online.

Fujitsu said Wandant would be the first cloud-based dog health-care service.

The data include walking, temperature, and shaking motion statistics. The users can manually enter additional data such as food quantities, weight, custom notes, and photos.

Fujitsu said, “The data are presented graphically on a custom website that makes trends in the dog’s activities easy to understand at a glance. This helps owners get a stronger sense of their dog’s health, while enabling communication with the dog.”

Wikimedia, IWF respond to block of Wikipedia over child pornography allegations

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Monday, December 8, 2008

On December 7, Wikinews first reported that some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the United Kingdom, were filtering access to an image and an article on the popular, free online encyclopedia Wikipedia, amid allegations that they contain child pornography. The filter was brought into play by the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), which issued a statement regarding the filtering shortly after Wikinews published the article. Wikimedia, the host of Wikinews and Wikipedia oppose the IWF’s actions, also issuing a statement.

“A Wikipedia web page, was reported through the IWF’s online reporting mechanism in December 2008. As with all child sexual abuse reports received by our Hotline analysts, the image was assessed according to the UK Sentencing Guidelines Council (page 109). The content was considered to be a potentially illegal indecent image of a child under the age of 18, but hosted outside the UK,” said the IWF in a statement posted on their website.

The image and article in question is that of the 1976 album Virgin Killer, a studio album by the Scorpions, a German rock band. The controversy began after the image of the album’s original cover, which depicted a naked prepubescent girl, was reported to the IWF in early December. Wikinews first discovered the controversial image in May 2008 after there were several attempts to delete it on Wikipedia. The image had been blocked because the IWF considered it to be “potentially illegal”. As a result, the IWF have contacted authorities in the United States and in the UK.

The measures applied redirect Wikipedia-bound traffic from a significant portion of the UK’s Internet population through a small number of servers which can log and filter the content that is available to the end user. A serious side-effect of this is the inability of administrators on Wikimedia sites to block vandals and other troublemakers without potentially impacting hundreds of thousands of innocent contributors who are working on the sites in good faith.

Contributors or individuals attempting to view an affected image or file, depending on their ISP, may get a warning saying, “we have blocked this page because, according to the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), it contains indecent images of children or pointers to them; you could be breaking UK law if you viewed the page.” Other ISPs provide blank pages, 404 errors, or other means of blocking the content.

Wikimedia was not informed that the image would be blacklisted because the IWF “does not issue takedown notices to ISPs or hosting companies outside the UK”. The servers for Wikimedia projects are located in Florida in the U.S., and according to Jay Walsh, the head of communications for Wikimedia, the Foundation “opposes” the action taken by the IWF.

“The IWF has confirmed to the Wikimedia Foundation that it has added Wikipedia to itsblacklist, which also had the unintended consequence of rendering UK-based internet usersunable to edit the encyclopedia,” said Walsh.

“We did advise one of our partner Hotlines abroad and our law enforcement partner agency of our assessment. The specific URL (individual webpage) was then added to the list provided to ISPs and other companies in the online sector to protect their customers from inadvertent exposure to a potentially illegal indecent image of a child,” added the statement by the IWF.

“We have no reason to believe the article, or the image contained in the article, has beenheld to be illegal in any jurisdiction anywhere in the world. We believe it’s worth noting that the image is currently visible on Amazon, where the album can be freely purchased by UK residents. Itis available on thousands of websites that are accessible to the UK public,” said Mike Godwin, legal counsel for Wikimedia. The cover has since been removed from Amazon.com.

Wikimedia projects such as Wikinews state in their policies that they are “not censored”. Wikimedia will continue discussions with the IWF in hopes of resolving the issue.

Las Vegas New Years Grand Canyon Helicopter Extravaganza!}

New Year’s week holiday in Las Vegas is fast approaching and now’s a great time to take a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon while seats are still available and cheap.

Las Vegas is a major hub for Grand Canyon flights and that’s why you can get great prices. To get the lowest, book your tour online and in advance. Further, you must complete the booking online to qualify for the discount rate.

There are two kinds of flights you can take from Las Vegas: flyover and landing tours. Both kinds go over Lake Mead and Hoover Dam, Fortification Hill and the Colorado River before reaching the Canyon.

Fast & Cheap

Flyover tours, which are the fastest way to enjoy the Canyon, go over the National Park before heading back to Las Vegas. These tours are also the least expensive and are great options for travelers on a budget.

I personally prefer the landing tours, and especially the one that goes to the bottom for a Champagne Picnic. You get up to 30 minutes to explore the base and toast the National Park. Many upgrade their package to include a Colorado River boat ride and a VIP Skywalk pass.

The Skywalk, by the way, is an all-glass bridge that lets you walk some 75 feet over the bottom, which is 4,000 feet under your feet! The views are spectacular, especially the ones of Eagle and Guano Points.

Basic & Deluxe

Vegas helicopters come in basic and deluxe. The main difference is the helicopter. On basic tours, you’ll be in the smaller Bell Ranger or AStar. Deluxe tours, by contrast, use the Ecostar 130, which is 25 percent bigger than the basic helicopters, includes a 180-degree wraparound window and boasts theater-style bucket seats.

Deluxe tours also include a limousine for pick up and drop off at your Las Vegas Strip hotel. Finally, these packages also include an extended tour of the Las Vegas Strip right, from downtown in the north to Mandalay Bay in the south.

It’s winter here in Las Vegas and the Canyon so please dress comfortably warm. Helicopters have excellent climate control so you won’t have to worry about the cold once in the cabin. However, if you take a landing tour, will be exiting the aircraft and you should dress in layers.

Tours depart at multiple times throughout the day and the best times in my opinion are mid-morning and sunset. I recommend the former because visibility is best and the air is smooth and the later because dusk is a magical time at the bottom and on the approach to Vegas when the lights turn on.

Conclusion

Las Vegas is a great place for New Year’s and a great place from which to take a helicopter tour. My preference is for landing tours, and most definitely the one that goes to the bottom for a Champagne picnic. Further, I recommend you book your tour online and in advance in order to get the best price. And, finally, take a deluxe package as that one includes the EcoStar 130, which is the better helicopter.

RTÉ’s Eddie Hobbs attracts massive audience

Thursday, August 25, 2005

In Ireland, RTÉ’s new “Rip Off Republic” TV series has attracted a record audience of 667,000 for its second show, making it one of Ireland’s top TV programs. The second show broadcast on Monday 15th August captured 50.5% of all TV viewers in Ireland.

The series which contains four shows broadcast from Dublin City University’s “Helix” centre, aims to expose over pricing and the exploitation of consumers in Ireland. Hosted by financial advisor Eddie Hobbs, the show has attracted huge media commentry, particularly as it has attracted the attention of the governments main party, Fianna Fail.

The main argument against the show has been that it generalises issues and makes exaggerated claims – for example it claimed that restaurants make a 300%+ profit on a typical bottle of wine, leading the viewer to believe that all businesses are making such a profit. This claim has since come under attack by restaurant owners nationwide. Other arguments against the show have stated that while inflation is less than 3%, wage growth is over 6% meaning people are still better off.

The third show will be broadcast on 29th August at 9.30pm on RTÉ One. It will focus on the transport sector in Ireland.

Thirteen die in Cumbria, United Kingdom, after series of shootings

Police have found the body of a man they had been hunting in Cumbria, United Kingdom for a series of shootings. Police later confirmed that twelve people had been killed with a further thirteen injured, three critically. Shots were fired in Whitehaven, Seascale and Egremont, with a total of thirty different crime scenes. The Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant was locked down for the first time in its history.

The prime suspect was named as 52 year old local man Derrick Bird, a taxi driver. The first of Bird’s victims was a fellow taxi driver shot in Whitehaven at about 10.30 local time, with the following victims being shot at random as Bird drove down the west coast. Originally driving a Citroën Picasso, he was later said to be on foot when he crashed his vehicle.

Members of the public were advised by police to stay indoors, and for those who saw him not to approach him, but to call them. The manhunt covered the Boot or Scafell Pike area, and at 14:04 BST (13:04 UTC) the Deputy Chief Constable of Cumbria reported that a body believed to be Bird was found in a wood near Boot with a firearm, and that he had turned the weapon on himself.

The affected area is popular with walkers and hikers, and currently, many schools across England are on half term, meaning the pupils have no classes.

British news network BBC News spoke to several eye-witnesses in relation to the incidents, from each of the areas, including Peter Watson of Whitehaven. “When I first got here it must have just happened. There was a man lying on the ground with police stood over him and a jacket on him,” he reported.

Home Secretary Theresa May is due to make a statement on the incident to the House of Commons tomorrow.

Professionals and students continue strike in New Delhi

New Delhi — Almost 10,000 people marched to Jantar Mantar from Maulana Azad Medical College in an anti-reservation rally on Saturday. Doctors and medical students say they will continue to strike and protest, despite an appeal from the prime minister to call off their agitation.

Students from Delhi University and medical colleges around the capital, parents, lawyers, and accountants joined the striking medicos, under the banner of ‘Youth for Equality’.

The students and their supporters want total rollback of a proposed quota-hike for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in elite educational institutions, and a review of the present reservation policy. “There are very less seats in the post-graduate streams compared to the undergraduate courses. Hence the reservation move will affect the future of majority students,” said student leader Praful Raj.

The students have support from many groups. They were led by the Youth for Equality, an AIIMS initiative, while United Students, a DU and JNU group, IIT alumni, RWAs (under the banner of United Residents Joint Action), Resident Doctors Associations from various government and private hospitals, Chartered Accountant’s Association, students from private universities like IP, and parents of agitating students also joined in.

Students from medical colleges in Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat, Punjab and Karnataka also took part in the rally. Students and doctors say the government has showed “scant regard to the sentiments of the students”, who have been protesting the proposed quota-hike for OBCs in elite educational institutions.

The students had appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to set up a non-political judicial committee to review the existing reservation policy and sought an audience with him to discuss the issue.

Free Celtic Cross Stitch Basic Designs And Patterns

Filed in Building Maintenance Leave a comment

By Jennifer Walter

Celtic Cross Stitch is a simple yet elegant way of doing embroidery. This type of embroidery art is very old and is one of the most common and the most appreciated form of the cross stitch.

History has never come across a tribe that was equally famous for their art as they were for their warrior ship. Even after 25 centuries we still have their creative art alive. We have their stories, myths, metal engravings, knot works, tattoos, body arts, designs and knots. The Celts not only dwelt in Britain, Ireland, Spain, France, Germany but they have also live in Bohemia, Italy and Turkey. This is the same reason Irish, French, Germans, English and Italians particularly have Celtic patterns in their embroideries, tapestries, tattoos and jewelery.

The celtic cross stitch embroideries are predominantly a part of heritage in Irish, Scotts and Minx. The embroidery patterns from this art form are excessively used in our day to day routines from cushion covers to tapestries, from tea cozies to spectacles’ covers and from clothes to wall hangings.

They also have the attributes of being rich in deep in colors and intricate designs, all which make them extraordinary eye catching and unique.

There are many celtic cross stitch patterns and designs which are typically embellished with patterns such as geometric, spirals, interlacing patterns, knot works, zoomorphic patterns and many more.

If you are starting out in this cross stitch, I would recommend you to try out their celtic knot works as they are particularly worth trying for. As these patterns can be from simple to very intricate ones, you can actually make a whole range of things for your own especially for your home decoration purposes.

So if Celtic art has ever inspired you either in form of clip arts or any other Celtic patterns, I would also recommend you to make a cross stitch of the same pattern on your favorite piece of clothing, your bag or even a wall hanging.

In fact, there are many ways which you can get ideas to cross stitch your art embroidery

You can also purchase a kit or get a pattern to make or you can even transform your favorite pattern into cross stitch pattern by pattern generating CDs or aids.

There are few basic celtic cross stitch designs and patterns for you to start things off. Below is the list of patterns to get you familiar with.

Simple x-shaped stitch – A cross stitch is very easy to make. Pass the needle with thread from one hole to the other diagonal hole at the corner of the square. Repeat with other two holes.

Half Stitch Pattern – There are actually two half stitches that overlap each other to make one cross stitch.

Quarter Stitch Pattern – Four of these stitches conjoin to make one cross stitch. But generally it is used alone as the length varies depending upon the celtic cross stitch fabric

Three Quarter Stitch Pattern – A three quarter stitch is made with one half stitch and one quarter stitch. A three quarter stitch is commonly used to add details in the cross stitch pattern

Back Stitch Pattern – Back stitch is generally used to make boundaries around the patterns and or to write alphabets in the patterns. This is a straight line made in the centre of the square bisecting it into two equal halves

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Tuesday, January 1, 2008

A fire in the Borrabbin National Park between Southern Cross and Coolgardie Western Australia, has so far burnt out 29,000 hectares and killed three truck drivers when the convoy they were travelling in was engulfed by the flames. Great Eastern Highway the primary road for all traffic from Perth heading to the East Coast of Australia has been closed. An alternate route is in place, police are diverting traffic at Norseman. The diversion adds 250 km(160 mi) for the journey to Perth.

The three truck drivers died on Sunday night after they joined a convoy that was released from Coolgardie after being told that the road was safe. Kieran McNamara director general of the Department of Environment and Conservation(DEC) admitted that it had been caught out by its decision to reopen the road at 8pm (wst) on 30 December.

Mr McNamara said “The decision was made with the advice from people at the firefront, and with the latest weather forecasts, and was judged to be the right decision and the safe decision at the time and in those circumstances… Regrettably and with hindsight, that’s not how it’s turned out.”

The driver of another truck in the convoy that was destroyed escaped with burns to his hands and was rushed through the fire front by firefighters to Yellowdine, another driver was rescued uninjured and return to Coolgardie, a spokesman for Whiteline transport the owners of this truck were thankful their driver survived unharmed saying the cost of the vehicle lost was about AU$400,000 plus cargo. Police confirmed that four trucks were destroyed by the fire.

Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia reported that they were fighting the fire without using water. All efforts were focused on building fire breaks with heavy machinery to contain the fire, that 90 volunteer fire fighters on the scene were there to defend the bulldozers.

The fire is still burning on a 150 km (90 mi) front, DEC spokesman says fire fighters are hoping to bring the fire under control with an expected cool change on Wednesday. The Weather Bureau has forecast temperatures to return above 40°C(105°F) by Thursday.

Local Police say that Great Eastern Highway will remain closed until the fire is under control and the damaged vehicles have been removed from the scene, at this stage its not expected to occur before Sunday.
