College Sports Programs Need Automated External Defibrillators

Filed in Medical Training Leave a comment

A defibrillator (AED) can save lives when sudden cardiac arrest due to arrhythmia (an abnormal electrical signal in the heart). Symptoms of cardiac arrest are chest pain or loss of consciousness. The AED restores the heart’s normal electrical signal…if the heart is not defibrillated in 3 minutes or less death or serious incapacitation will occur.

Because one of the main causes of death in the United States is cardiovascular disease; more and more businesses and employers are installing AED’s and AED programs in the work place to add to their business’s emergency medical readiness, practices and programs. AEDs will save lives that why AED certification is the necessary for rescuers.

AED/CPR training and certifications are offered by The American Heart Association, The American Red Cross, The American Safety and Health Institute as well as AED manufacturers like Medtronic Physio-Control (LifePak) and Cardiac Science (PowerHeart)…all offer AED/CPR training classes to business, non-profits and commercial organizations.

For residences AED/CPR training is done in homes using a DVD without a facilitator. Residences don’t get (or need) AED/CPR certification. Certification only occurs when a training class is paired with a national AED/CPR certifying organization’s skills evaluation methodology.

During sudden cardiac arrest, your brain and other vital organs are being starved of blood and oxygen which carries live saving nutrients. You can die in minutes and/or survive but sustain permanent damage to your brain and other organs. The heart’s rhythm must be restored fast since every minute that passes is critical to your chance of survival and the amount of damage you sustain.

When the electrodes or pads of automated external defibrillator capable of automatic operation are attached to your chest, these electrodes can detect the heart’s rhythm during cardiac arrest and automatically delivers an electric shock to get your heart beating again.

Sudden cardiac arrest happens when your heart’s electrical activity is disrupted and the heartbeat gets dangerously fast (ventricular tachycardia) or chaotic (ventricular fibrillation). Your heart stops beating effectively and does not adequately pump blood because of these irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmia).

A non trained bystander that acts quickly and calls 911 to summon emergency medical services to the scene before using the AED can then grab an “automatic operation” defibrillator with voice prompts and easily connect it to your chest to allow the AED to evaluate your heart rhythm. If your heart rhythm can be treated with an electric shock, the AED automatically sends an electrical shock to get your heart back into a normal rhythm.

Only defibrillation can restore the heart’s normal rhythm and ultimately save your life although cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is important to use to keep some blood flowing to your heart and brain.

Automated external defibrillators are now commonly available in businesses, residences, homes, malls, office buildings, sports arenas, golf courses, cruise ships, schools, casinos, airports and airplanes any many, many public locations governed by various state public access defibrillation laws.

Placing an automated external defibrillator in homes is rapidly increasing because you don’t lose valuable minutes waiting for 911 to arrive with an AED. In an emergency, the automated external defibrillator offers step-by-step voice instructions to guide a user through the defibrillation process. The defibrillator explains how to check for breathing and a pulse and how to position electrode pads on the person’s chest.

Once the pads are in place, the AED automatically analyzes the person’s heart rhythm and determines if a shock is needed. The machine instructs the user to push a button to deliver the shock and guides users through cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Putting automated external defibrillators in business and homes which definition are populated by lots of people can save thousands of lives each year. If anyone collapses from sudden cardiac arrest in a home or business, a family member, friend or fellow employee could quickly grab the office or home AED and use it to save a life.

If you decide to get an automated external defibrillator for your home or office, take an AED/CPR training class certified by nationally recognized organizations and make sure you follow the training video, operating and maintenance instructions provided by manufacturer.

United States Homeland Security network monitors suspicious activity

Wednesday, August 3, 2005

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is deploying its new Homeland Security Information Network – Secret (HSIN-Secret) in all 50 state Emergency Operations Centers as well as 18 additional state and local law enforcement sites. “The secret network is a component of the HSIN, which is the primary conduit for DHS to share information on terrorist threats, suspicious activity and incident management with state, local, tribal and private-sector officials.” reports Government Computer News.

Development on this $350 million system by Northrop Grumman Corporation was begun in March of 2004 with basic operation achieved in just 4 months.

“The Homeland is more secure when each hometown is more secure,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge in DHS’s February 24, 2004 press release that launched the program. “Future program expansion will include the county level, communication at the classified SECRET level, and the involvement of the private sector.” it continues.

With the “Secret” component in place, classified information can now be disseminated to authorized individuals at all levels of government and business throughout the country almost instantly. HSIN lets most government agencies as well as many private companies doing business with the government share information on the whereabouts and suspicious activities of anyone that comes to their attention. Internal policies and the judgement of the system’s users provide privacy and civil rights protections, while who can access the system is determined by DHS.

A certified nursing assistant is under the jurisdiction of licensed practical nurse or registered nurse. A CNA is a part of the healthcare professionals but the scope of work is lesser as compared to licensed practical nurse and registered nurse. If you are interested about this career you should attend some training to meet the qualifications set by the local jurisdictions. Seventy-five hours classroom experience as well as twenty hours clinical training is required in a training program. It is important for candidate to meet the requirements in order to obtain certification.CertificationThe certification as certified nursing assistant is very important in looking for a job. However, it is not that easy to acquire the certification because there is a need to pass the examination as well as the training in healthcare facility. In some cases, the certification is given according to the environment of employment by the applicant. This means that if the applicant wants to work in nursing home the certification will be for the specific employment alone. On the other hand, after the certification is granted it is still required to comply with another set of training every year. This is to know if the certified nursing assistant is still well versed about the techniques and procedures to ensure efficiency of giving care to patients.CNA CourseIn order to become a certified nursing assistant and obtain the necessary certification, you should contact the association of local nurses in your area. In this way, they can give you ideas about the agencies and institutions where you can attend formal training. You will also know the necessary program for CNA courses.

Gene mutation produces autism-like traits in mice

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

By causing the mutation of one specific gene, researchers have produced mice with two frequently encountered behavioral traits of persons diagnosed with autism. Autism commonly affects the ability to interact socially and is associated with repetitive behavior. The finding was reported in the March 20 online edition of Nature.

Using mice, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Duke University mutated one of the genes associated with autism, known as shank3, a gene that controls the production of the shank3 protein present in the brain. Mice that were given this mutation exhibited repetitive behavior and avoided social interactions with the mice around them.

According to MIT Professor Guoping Feng: “Our study demonstrated that Shank3 mutation in mice lead to defects in neuron-neuron communications.”

Shank3 protein are found in synapses within the brain. Synapses allow brain cells (called neurons) to communicate with each other. The mutation in the mouse gene interfered with this communication, apparently producing the subsequent autism-like traits. Researchers believe their work demonstrates the important role of shank3 in the functioning of brain circuits that determine behavior.

While hundreds of genes have been linked to autism in human patients, only a small percentage have been linked to shank3. Professor Feng hypothesizes that disruptions of other genes that act on the production of brain proteins affecting synaptic communication may also be related to autistic behavior. If this disruption is real, Feng claims that treatments could be developed to correct synaptic function for any defective synaptic protein in an autistic patient.

Feng continued; “These findings and the mouse model now allow us to figure out the precise neural circuit defects responsible for these abnormal behaviours, which could lead to novel strategies and targets for developing treatment.”

About one in 110 children in the U.S., and at least one in 100 in UK, have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, for which there is currently no effective cure.

Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

In February of 2006, the Savarino Services Construction Corp. proposed the construction of a seven million dollar hotel on Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York. In order for the hotel to be built, at least five properties containing businesses and residents would have to be destroyed. It was not certain whether the properties were owned by Savarino or by the landlord Hans Mobius. The hotel was designed by Karl Frizlen of the Frizlen Group, and is planned to be a franchise of the Wyndham Hotels group.

Elmwood Avenue is known by the community as a popular shopping center, and Nancy Pollina of Don Apparel (who is “utterly against” the construction) claims it’s the only reason why students from Buffalo State College leave campus. Additionally, Michael Faust of Mondo Video said he did not want to “get kicked out of here [his video store property].”

In 1995, a Walgreens was proposed to be built on the same land, but Walgreens later withdrew its request for a variance because of pressure from the community. More recently, Pano Georgiadis tried to get the rights to demolish the Atwater House next to his restaurant on Elmwood Avenue, but was denied a permit due to the property’s historical value. He has since been an opponent to the hotel construction.

In the process of debating the hotel, it was thought that a hotel had previously existed on the proposed site, however; research done at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society had shown that no hotel had previously existed on the site.
