Oil facilities in Saudi Arabia hit by drone attacks

Yesterday, oil facilities belonging to Saudi Arabia’s state-owned Saudi Aramco were hit by multiple drone strikes in a pre-dawn raid. The attacks triggered major fires at a processing plant and an oil field, which state media said were under control. The Yemen-based Houthi movement claimed responsibility for the attacks.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, the attacks occurred at 4:00 A.M. local time (0100 UTC) and struck the largest processing plant at Abqaiq and the Khurais oil field. The oil field is about 160 km (100 miles) east of the capital, Riyadh. The agency did not mention if there were casualties, but said exports were continuing.

Reuters, citing anonymous sources, reported both production and export of oil had been disrupted. Saudi officials subsequently said 5.7 million barrels of per-day production had been disrupted. This would be nearly half of Saudi Arabia’s entire production and around five percent on a global basis.

Speaking on al-Masirah TV in Yemen, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said it had carried out the attack using ten drones. According to him, it was among the largest Houthi operations inside of Saudi Arabia and was accomplished with the help of “honourable people inside the kingdom”.

“These attacks are our right, and we warn the Saudis that our targets will keep expanding”, Saree said. “We have the right to strike back in retaliation to the air strikes and the targeting of our civilians for the last five years.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo posted a message on Twitter blaming Iran for the attacks, saying there was “no evidence the attacks came from Yemen.” BBC’s Jonathan Marcus said questions remain how much direct Iranian assistance is received by the Houthis who are ideologically aligned with Iran.

In 2015, Saudi Arabia started supporting the government of Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi against the Houthi rebellion, providing airstrikes with the Royal Saudi Air Force. The United Nations called the resulting humanitarian crisis the worst in the world.

In 2006, Abqaiq was the target of an Al-Qaeda suicide attack.

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

Choosing The Best Type Of Crate For Your Dog Part 1

Filed in Outdoor Kitchens Leave a comment

Submitted by: Esm e La Fleur

Choosing the best type of crate for your dog depends on the purpose for which you intend to use it. When I first brought my German Shepherd Dog Sasha home to live with me as an 10 week old puppy, I started with a wire dog crate. I had three primary objectives at the time: first, I wanted to potty train him in the simplest manner possible; second, I wanted to keep him safe and out of harms way during the times I could not give him my full attention; and third, I wanted to prevent him from damaging or destroying furniture, carpeting, drapes, shoes, and other belongings in our home.

The crate that was the best match for all of these needs in one package was made from wire and came with a divider panel. The divider panel allowed me to buy a crate large enough to accommodate Sasha when he was full-grown, but it also gave me the ability to reduce the space in the crate that would be available to him while he was small. The divider panel also gave me the ability to slowly expand the space available to him as he grew, giving him just enough space to move around but not so much that he was inclined to go potty inside the crate itself.

Dogs are inherently very clean animals. By nature, they do not like to soil themselves, and will do almost anything to avoid that from happening. If you put a small puppy inside a large crate, they have the option of going potty in one corner of the crate and keeping themselves from being contaminated by the results. Having a wire crate with an adjustable divider panel was the perfect solution for helping me to teach Sasha to relieve himself outside. If a puppy does not have enough room inside the crate to go potty and remain clean, he or she is far less likely to have an accident in the crate.

This arrangement will encourage your puppy to let you know when they need to go potty, so you can take them outside. It will also reduce the number of messes you have to clean up. This method and approach worked brilliantly with Sasha. He never once relieved himself in his crate. When he had to go potty, he let me know — in no uncertain terms — that he needed to go outside. But, I had to keep him in his crate, whenever I could not watch him like a hawk. A puppy s bladder is extremely tiny and cannot hold much urine. Sasha had to urinate about every 45 minutes, like clockwork, for the first few weeks that I had him.

As he grew, and his bladder got stronger, Sasha could go longer and longer periods before needing to relieve himself. But if I was unable to keep a close eye on him, I had to keep him in his crate or there was a high probability that I would find a puddle somewhere or other. After playing for a certain amount of time, Sasha would need to go potty also. So, even when I was watching him, I had to stay on my toes and be ready to get him outside quickly at the first indication that he needed to pee.

This wire dog crate worked just as well for keeping Sasha safe and out of trouble. Puppies will chew just about anything they can get their teeth on, from your sofa to the electrical cords that run your computer. Nothing is immune to a puppy s curiosity and natural propensity to explore the world through his or her mouth. If you want to keep your home intact, and prevent your puppy from hurting him or herself, a crate is absolutely essential in my experience. It is really quite amazing just how much damage can be accomplished by a puppy in a stunningly short period of time.

I remember one day I was cooking in the kitchen while I was taking care of Sasha s younger brother Blitz, who was then about 6 months old. I was keeping my eye on him but, as it turned out, I was not watching him closely enough. I had my back to him for about 2 minutes. In that time, he managed to drag a 1 gallon plastic container of canola oil, that I was using to keep the pantry door open, into my living room, chew the cap off, and allow the contents to drain right onto the middle of the carpeting. I honestly could not believe he did that but, by the time I caught him, it was too late and there was nothing I could do but laugh at the absurdity of it all. So much for that carpet! A very expensive lesson learned.

So, in summary, wire crates are probably the best dog crate to choose when you have a new puppy that needs to be potty trained. It also serves to protect your home from your puppy s strong proclivity to chew anything and everything in sight, while simultaneously preventing him or her from accidental harm when left unsupervised. For example, if your puppy decided to chew through the electric cords of your entertainment center, he or she could easily be electrocuted in the process. There is also a high probability that your puppy could swallow something dangerous when you are not watching, which could turn into a very expensive veterinary bill or even a life threatening event.

The other neat thing about wire dog crates is that they fold down compactly and take up very little storage space when not in use. They can also be easily stowed away in a trunk or roof rack cargo carrier during a road trip, and then quickly popped open once you arrive at your desired destination. Depending on the size of your pup and the size of your vehicle, this type of crate can also be used to contain your furry friend in your vehicle during the trip.

However, while many people use wire dog crates to contain their dogs while traveling in a vehicle, I personally prefer to use a plastic dog crate for this purpose with Sasha. In part 2 of this article, I will explore the unique advantages of plastic dog crates, and why I believe they are a superior choice when traveling with your dog.

HIV-positive man receives 35 years for spitting on Dallas police officer

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Sunday, May 18, 2008

An HIV-positive man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday, one day after being convicted of harassment of a public servant for spitting into the eye and open mouth of a Dallas, Texas police officer in May 2006. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that no one has ever contracted HIV from saliva, and a gay-rights and AIDS advocacy group called the sentence excessive.

A Dallas County jury concluded that Willie Campbell’s act of spitting on policeman Dan Waller in 2006 constituted the use of his saliva as a deadly weapon. The incident occurred while Campbell, 42, was resisting arrest while being taken into custody for public intoxication.

“He turns and spits. He hits me in the eye and mouth. Then he told me he has AIDS. I immediately began looking for something to flush my eyes with,” said Waller to The Dallas Morning News.

Officer Waller responded after a bystander reported seeing an unconscious male lying outside a building. Dallas County prosecutors stated that Campbell attempted to fight paramedics and kicked the police officer who arrested him for public intoxication.

It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears.

Prosecutors said that Campbell yelled that he was innocent during the trial, and claimed a police officer was lying. Campbell’s lawyer Russell Heinrichs said that because he had a history of convictions including similarly attacking two other police officers, biting inmates, and other offenses, he was indicted under a habitual offender statute. The statute increased his minimum sentence to 25 years in prison. Because the jury ruled that Campbell’s saliva was used as a deadly weapon, he will not be eligible for parole until completing at least half his sentence.

If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.

The organization Lambda Legal (Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund), which advocates for individuals living with HIV, says that saliva should not be considered a deadly weapon. Bebe Anderson, the HIV projects director at Lambda Legal, spoke with The Dallas Morning News about the sentence. “It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears,” said Anderson.

The Dallas County prosecutor who handled the trial, Jenni Morse, said that the deadly weapon finding was justified. “No matter how minuscule, there is some risk. That means there is the possibility of causing serious bodily injury or death,” said Morse. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins stated: “If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.”

Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.

A page at the CDC’s website, HIV and Its Transmission, states: “HIV has been found in saliva and tears in very low quantities from some AIDS patients.” The subsection “Saliva, Tears, and Sweat” concludes that: “Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.” On Friday the Dallas County Health Department released a statement explaining that HIV is most commonly spread through sexual contact, sharing needles, or transfusion from an infected blood product.

Gay Talese on the state of journalism, Iraq and his life

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Gay Talese wants to go to Iraq. “It so happens there is someone that’s working on such a thing right now for me,” the 75-year-old legendary journalist and author told David Shankbone. “Even if I was on Al-Jazeera with a gun to my head, I wouldn’t be pleading with those bastards! I’d say, ‘Go ahead. Make my day.'”

Few reporters will ever reach the stature of Talese. His 1966 profile of Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was not only cited by The Economist as the greatest profile of Sinatra ever written, but is considered the greatest of any celebrity profile ever written. In the 70th anniversary issue of Esquire in October 2003, the editors declared the piece the “Best Story Esquire Ever Published.”

Talese helped create and define a new style of literary reporting called New Journalism. Talese himself told National Public Radio he rejects this label (“The term new journalism became very fashionable on college campuses in the 1970s and some of its practitioners tended to be a little loose with the facts. And that’s where I wanted to part company.”)

He is not bothered by the Bancrofts selling The Wall Street Journal—”It’s not like we should lament the passing of some noble dynasty!”—to Rupert Murdoch, but he is bothered by how the press supported and sold the Iraq War to the American people. “The press in Washington got us into this war as much as the people that are controlling it,” said Talese. “They took information that was second-hand information, and they went along with it.” He wants to see the Washington press corp disbanded and sent around the country to get back in touch with the people it covers; that the press should not be so focused on–and in bed with–the federal government.

Augusten Burroughs once said that writers are experience junkies, and Talese fits the bill. Talese–who has been married to Nan Talese (she edited James Frey‘s Million Little Piece) for fifty years–can be found at baseball games in Cuba or the gay bars of Beijing, wanting to see humanity in all its experience.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with Gay Talese.

JonBenet Ramsey murder suspect back in America

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Monday, August 21, 2006

John Mark Carr, the man who has been accused of killing six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey ten years ago, has arrived in the US after being extradited from Bangkok in Thailand.

The forty-one year-old American schoolteacher was escorted by US security officials from Bangkok, but officers from the Los Angeles Police Department accompanied him after he went through customs. He was then whisked off in a helicopter and taken to the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles.

“Mr. Karr is expected to remain in the custody of local authorities while the Boulder District Attorney’s Office seeks his extradition to Colorado,” a statement from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement said.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Karr confessed to being with JonBenét when she died, adding that her death was an accident. “I was with JonBenét when she died. I loved JonBenét. She died accidentally. I am so very sorry for what happened to JonBenét. It’s very important for me that everyone knows that I love her very much, that her death was unintentional, that it was an accident.”

Despite his confession, Karr’s then ex-wife said that he was in Alabama with her when the murder occurred.

JonBenét was found beaten and strangled in her Colorado home on the day after Christmas in 1996.
