University of Chicago’s Mansueto Library suffers power outage

The University of Chicago’s Joe and Rika Mansueto Library was shut down by a power outage for a short time on Saturday, preventing library personnel from providing full services to its patrons.

The US$81 million library, which opened May 16, includes a 180-seat reading room under a 691-panel glass dome. Five stories underground, a system of five cranes retrieves books sorted into bins, carrying a maximum of about 3.5 million volumes. As of 3:50 p.m. CDT, the automated storage and retrieval system, along with staff computers at the circulation desk, were shut down, preventing patrons from retrieving materials stored underground.

The glass ceiling normally allows enough natural light to pass, but rain clouds in the area darkened the room. Patrons began to flip light switches in front of their seats, but to no avail, and a circulation clerk announced that there had been a power outage. Some patrons then moved to the adjacent Regenstein Library, which still had power. Power was still running along the corridor linking Mansueto and Regenstein Libraries, along with the nearby restrooms and Special Collections Research Center.

An electrician arrived at the building at around 3:50 p.m., and power had been restored by 5:45 p.m.

Movie Acting Techniques And Tips}

Casting calls for Disney channel can be very intimidating. The fear of everybody staring at you as they wait for you to do what it is you are going is what challenges most people. In addition, there is a huge camera facing you. This does not have to be the situation, since you have the power to make casting for Disney easy and swift. It’s true; auditions for film can be very intimidating. Everyone is staring at you, waiting for you to do something. And there’s a gigantic camera pointed in your face. But in reality, movie acting should be done with ease. Practicing a couple of simple techniques and tips will go a long way in making your audition experience much smoother. Here are a few of these tips:

Relaxation

Relaxation is a very vital part of being a successful actor, and is considered as one the most important skills to learn if you are to be a great actor. So much emphasis is on relaxation since the camera notices every little detail. Nothing you do, from blinking and nodding the head to the sounds you make, will escape the camera’s eye. Another important reason why you need to learn to relax is that it helps you to pay attention and react to your partner in a scene. Every great film actor lives by listening and reacting to the director’s commands. At a glance, it might seem easy to relax, but when the director is behind schedule, the pressure usually falls on the actor. Thus, casting for Disney requires you to have the capability to stay calm under high amounts of pressure.

Ignore the camera

To be picked after the casting calls for Disney channel, you will have to prove that you do not mind the camera. In fact, you might as well get used to the camera sooner than later since for the rest of your life as a film actor, you will always have a camera around you. Even when you are not auditioning or acting, paparazzi will always follow you around. Therefore, it is indeed important to learn to ignore the camera. When the camera has begun filming, imagine that it is just you and your scene partner around. Zoom out everyone else from your view. The director, the crew, the cinematographer, the producer, and everyone else do not exist. It is easy to achieve this. Just focus on the eyes of your scene partner. Eyes are the most vital facial features on film. When looking at the eyes of your scene partner, look him or her in one eye instead of moving from eye to eye. Look at the eye that is nearer to the lens of the camera.

Hit your mark

There is always a mark on the floor during auditions, normally indicated by a black tape. It shows where an actor should stand. This is important since the camera is set to focus at a certain range. If you stand to far from this mark, your image on camera will be blurry.

Minneapolis I-35W bridge spans Mississippi River

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Monday, July 7, 2008

The United States bridge that collapsed almost a year ago, spanning the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is close to being reconstructed. The final sections of the northbound lanes of the new Interstate 35W St. Anthony Falls Bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota were put in place on July 5. The final segment was raised with a barge-mounted crane from the Mississippi River below. A temporary bridge now connects the two segments.

The remaining seven-foot gap will be closed in several days with concrete which is poured in place. The segments for the southbound lanes will now be raised and connected. The segments were cast in a work area which was on the 35W roadbed and were then moved to Bohemian Flats, near the University of Minnesota West Bank campus. A crane places each segment on a barge for delivery upstream to the bridge site.

The bridge may be completed as early as September, well ahead of the scheduled opening date of December 24th.

Earlier today in a twelfth round Australian Football League game played in rainy Sydney, the Richmond Tigers beat the expansion GWS Giants by a score of 11.20.86 to 12.2.74.

Jeremy Cameron led the Giants in scoring with three goals. Rhys Palmer and Toby Greene each scored a pair of goals. Jonathon Patton, making his first appearance with the team, scored a goal. On the Tigers side, Daniel Connors led in scoring with three goals and one behind, while Jack Riewoldt also scored three goals.

According to the Australian Associated Press, a Richmond loss would have been embarrassing for the finals aspirants, a feat the team avoided by attempting 17 more goals than their opposition.

US Senate advances health care reform bill

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Tuesday, December 22, 2009

The US Senate has voted by 60 to 40 votes to close debate on landmark health care reform legislation backed by President Barack Obama but unanimously opposed by Republican lawmakers. Now, the divided chamber appears to be heading towards a vote to pass the bill on Thursday.

All 100 senators were gathered in the Capitol building for a key procedural vote on health care reform legislation. All 58 Democrats in the Senate, plus the two independents who normally vote with them, voted for cloture, which limits the length of debate. All forty Republicans unanimously opposed the cloture.

The bill would extend health insurance coverage to 30 million US residents who currently lack it, and forbid insurance companies from practices such as denying coverage due to pre-existing conditions. Most residents would be required to purchase health insurance for the first time, with subsidies provided to those who cannot afford it.

“We’ll get this [bill] passed before Christmas and it will be one of the best Christmas presents this Congress has ever given the American people,” said Democratic senator Tom Harkin.

“This country, the greatest and richest the world has ever seen, is the only advanced nation on earth where dying for a lack of health insurance is even possible,” said Senate Majority leader Harry Reid.

Most Republicans, however, said they believed the bill is too expensive and would not correct the current problems with the US’s health care.

If the bill passes in the Senate, that version will have to be merged with a more liberal version passed by the House of Representatives which includes a government-run alternative, not included in the Senate version.

Explore If You Dare : The Danger Of Journaling

Presidents Journal:

The National Archives displays one of President Ronald Reagan’s personal diaries. The volume is opened to the June 4 – 6, 1984 entries, which include Reagan’s description of his visits to the beaches of Normandy to mark the 40th anniversary of D-Day. The entries are his personal writings about one of his most memorable speeches.

Researchers Prove Journaling Is Beneficial For The Physical Body:

In her article, “The Health Benefits of Journaling,” reviewed by Scientific Advisory Board, Julie Axelrod shows that journaling is health-wise. She refers to “University of Texas at Austin psychologist and researcher James Pennebaker [who] contends that regular journaling strengthens immune cells, called T-lymphocytes.” If you wish to take that to the extreme: no pills, no exercising, no special diet needed. Only pen and paper.

Resistance To Self-improvement:

Truly, momentum of habit has a lot to do with progress, or on the other hand, status quo. Essentially, however, when it comes down to where the rubber meets the road, your most trusted advisor, and your most dangerous enemy, is always yourself. Thoughts go around and around in our heads, planted by outer influences that derive, unfortunately, from our previous thoughts. Talk about rabbit-holes, and the endless conundrum of the source of everything!

Humans spend an enormous sum of money, and time, asking others to tell them what to do, how to make their dreams come true, and sometimes what their dreams actually are. We want others to give us a roadmap about how to live our lives. One seeming solution to this current dilemma is to hire a life coach. Similar to a workout coach and a business coach but focusing generally on relationship, personal financial, and self-esteem goals. The life coaching business is booming. As written by DISCInsights in “The Growing Profession of Life Coaching: A Statistical Overview,” they say that, based on research of The International Coach Federation and PeopleKeys survey, “As a whole, the life coaching industry takes in a yearly revenue of over $2.5 billion.”

But what if, for instance, you’ve been caught in the COVID whirlwind, and have less funds to invest in improving yourself? Instead you must implement survival tactics. Or, what if you have become a serial self-help course buyer to the tune of thousands, maybe gleaning one or two insights per course that you didn’t know about before? The relevant point here is that you can get stuck on the searching merry-go-round, as much as you can be stuck trying to do life better than your parents, peers, and problems taught you. The Bible is free, and is one of the best roadmaps. The Bible cautions us to trust no man but to look inward. Psalm 146:3 reads: “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.” In The Moral Sayings of Publius Syrus, A Roman Slave (1833) is written, “Trust no man as a friend till you have tried him.”

Being the complex creatures that humans are, how can we untangle the overwhelming thought-mess we have created for ourselves? All attempts at trusting our own heartfelt instincts can be squashed in an instant because we are creatures of habit, especially our thought habits.

The Bad News And The Good News:

Because none of the other 7 billion humans on earth have your unique DNA structure, you are going to have to figure out your life by yourself. Is it a dream? Are we in a matrix? Is life on planet Earth a psyop? Doesn’t matter what you call it. The essential point is to uncover (or unmask, if you will) your easiest, most pleasant, most rewarding personal lifestyle. Notwithstanding the few criminally-minded giants that we sometimes exalt, honestly speaking we are adherents of such misbehavior ourselves, although on a smaller scale. Journaling can show us our behavioral patterns, and if we want we can change those minor-seeming thought habits before they become entrenched in our psyche and make us behave like hamsters on a wheel.

Two life-enhancing detours from self-destruction that you can take are actually very easy:

 1. Talk to yourself.
 2. Write it Down.

All you need is paper and pen (stronger than using devices because you get the double benefit of tactile motor and visual combination learning). Writing by candlelight can be a soothing experience if the lights go out momentarily.

The real danger lies in standing still, being a non-moving target. What are you waiting for, heroes? #RememberToJournal

Property Investment: How To Buy One On A Small Budget

Filed in Real Estate Leave a comment

Submitted by: Joel Teo

We grow up with the fixed idea that our future relate mostly to getting a job and making small fortunes which will ensure us the long-dreamt house. But have you ever considered that real estate investing does not necessarily mean having a large amount of money? Your budget is small, but that shouldn t stop you from enjoying the benefits of real estate investing. In fact, buying cheap can turn into a gold mine, not to mention the comfort benefices.

If you are considering the real estate investing option, you should think of making some economies. This doesn t mean that you have to live on a 5% from your income and put away the rest. Sure, it would be great if you could do that, but real estate investing has the great advantage that you don t have to be a millionaire to afford accommodation.

The best idea for low-budget real estate investing is purchasing a cheap house and turning it into your dream villa. It s not very hard to find a real estate investing offer at low-cost and the great thing about it is that it can be renovated and value-addable. To make your real estate investing a flexible business, you should go for wood and natural material houses. Also, consider the fact that a good 2007 real estate investing tip is the ecologically sensitive approach. This way, you could orientate towards solar systems and wooden floors, which will let you cut back on your expenses.

Moreover, real estate investing at low-cost lets you buy a unfurnished house that you can afterwards design and arrange at your own taste. This way, real estate investing becomes both cheap and original, allowing you to turn your home into a personality-centered estate. In real estate investing, quality does not necessarily mean lots of money. There are many houses that look expensive, which, in fact, are home-made products. Likewise, real estate investing can show you that success depends on you alone and not the money you put into the business.

If low-budget real estate investing still doesn t convince you, then you should take a glance at old houses: they come in cheap, can be transformed and have a solid foundation. What more could you ask for? Real estate investing basically encourages you to purchase, whether your budget is small or high and lets you, aside from making substantial economies, take over control in the renovation and furnishing section. Eventually, real estate investing turns out to be the best choice for both property investment and accommodation provider. And getting a house doesn t have to mean losing a fortune, but really taking things step by step and resorting to the unlimited world of possibilities that real estate investing can bring.

State Farm Insurance allegedly destroying papers

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Tuesday, April 11, 2006

Zach Scruggs, a lawyer for United States Senator Trent Lott, says that State Farm Insurance Company is destroying records related to claims for damage from Hurricane Katrina.

The records allegedly contain information saying that State Farm fraudulently denied insurance claims made by its policy holders, including Lott, that had homes there were damaged or destroyed when Hurricane Katrina came ashore on the Gulf Coast.

Scruggs said that Lott has “good faith belief” that many employees of the insurance company in Biloxi, Mississippi are destroying engineer’s reports that were inconclusive as to whether or not water or wind was the main cause of damage to the buildings affected by the hurricane.

Lott is among thousands of home and/or business owners who had their property damaged or destroyed during the hurricane and had their claims denied because State Farm claimed that their policies don’t cover damage caused by floods or water that was driven by the wind.

State Farm has not issued a statement on the matter so far.

Former Formula 1 designer unveils new electric car

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Monday, November 9, 2009

Former Formula One McLaren designer Gordon Murray has unveiled a new all-electric car.

The car model, which is known as the T.27, is due to be developed over the course of the next 16 months with four prototypes. The process that will be used during the course of the manufacturing of the vehicle is called iStream. The technology iStream had been invented by Gordon Murray in 1999 and means that all the parts are designed using a computer.

The project has approximately received £9,000,000 (US$14,919,000) in investment. The electric car is designed for urban purposes, such as in cities or towns. The weight of the vehicle is just 600 kilograms. It has the ability to travel at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour and can go for a maximum of 100 miles between recharges.

The designer thinks that motorists will some day be travelling in vehicles like this. Murray believes that the new car will be ‘the most efficient electric vehicle on earth’.

Afghan women’s rights official shot dead

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Tuesday, September 26, 2006

Safia Ahmed-jan, the director of the Afghan Ministry of Women’s Affairs for the Khandahar province and an advocate of women’s rights and a strong critic of the Taliban‘s repression of those rights, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen outside her home in Khandahar city in southern Afghanistan on Monday.

Safia Ama-jan, as she was known locally, is the first woman official to be targeted by the Taliban-led insurgency since it was deposed in 2001.

Safia Ahmed-jan taught at a girls’ school and was a high-school principal in Khandahar prior to the Taliban’s 1996 rise to power in Afghanistan. When the Taliban regime banned education for girls and forbade women from working outside the home, she ran an underground school for girls at her home, said her son Naqibullah, speaking to the Associated Press.

After the Taliban government was overthrown in 2001, Ahmed-jan became the provincial chief for women’s affairs in 2002, when the ministry was established and has since then held that position, worked for women’s rights and particularly, championed the cause of educating girls. Her secretary, Abdullah Khan told Associated Press that among her most successful projects were the vocational training schools she opened in Khandahar, where almost 1000 women were taught baking, tailoring and other skills.

Ahmed-jan has also been fiercely critical of the repression of women during the Taliban rule, in a region that has remained conservative and emerged as a hotbed of the Taliban’s insurgent activity. Her requests for personal security guards and transport went unheeded by the government, according to local media reports, though her nephew, Muhammad Asif told the New York Times that Ahmed-jan preferred to keep a low profile and used a taxi or public transport even though her office maintained cars and drivers.

Ahmed-jan was shot dead outside her house at about 7:30 a.m. local time (UTC+4:30) on Monday, as she left for work in a taxi. The gunmen are believed to have left scene on a motorcycle, and tyre marks have been found by the police, said the provincial governor Asadullah Khaled, who visited the scene of the attack.

Ahmed-jan was shot four times with a pistol, Muhammad Haidar, who worked in her office told the New York Times. Mohammad Nader, the head nurse at Khandahar’s main hospital where Ahmed-jan was taken to, confirmed to the Chicago Tribune that she was shot four times, including once in the head.

She was about 65 years old.

Accounts of the shooting are sketchy, several reports suggesting no one witnessed it. However, one man, identified as Allaudin told Al Jazeera that he saw two men on motorcycles waiting on the road, who attacked Ahmed-jan as she left her house.

A spokesman for the Khandahar governor, Daud Ahmadi confirmed the death and said that Ahmed-jan had died on the spot. An investigation into the attack has begun, and local officials have blamed the Taliban.

Hundreds of men and women, including the Governor Asadullah Khaled were present at Ahmed-jan’s funeral on Monday evening, which took place in Khandahar’s main Shia mosque.

The killing has been strongly condemned by the Afghan President Hamid Karzai as well as aid and human rights organisations in Afghanistan.

Aleem Siddique, a spokesman for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), said that UNAMA was “appalled at the senseless murder” of a woman who was working to ensure a full and equal part in the future of Afghanistan for its women. He added, “We share the sentiment of the majority of Afghan people who are appalled at this killing.”

Abdul Quadar Noorzai, head of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) for the Khandahar region told IRIN News that Ahmed-jan’s death will have a “serious impact on women’s activities in the south where women are already suffering from … the deteriorating security and conservative traditions,”.

Fariba Ahmedi, a woman MP from Khandahar who was present at Ahmed-jan’s funeral told the Associated Press, “The enemy of Afghanistan killed her, but they should know it will not derail women from the path we are on. We will continue on our way,”.

Sonja Bachmann, a U.N. political officer who knew Ahmed-jan well told the New York Times that Ahmed-jan “did a good job, she worked in a very low-key way and worked hard to raise awareness about women’s issues.”

Reuters and Associated Press received phone calls, claiming responsibility for the attacks on behalf of Mullah Sadullah, a regional Taliban commander, but no confirmation of the claim has been possible.

Another caller, who identified himself as Taliban commander Mullah Hayat Khan told Al Jazeera that Ahmed-jan was killed because she worked for the government.

The Taliban-led insurgency has stepped up attacks in recent months, killing hundreds of people this year.

Last week, 19 Afghans working for reconstruction projects in the region were killed after their bus was ambushed. The Governor of Paktia province, a close associate of President Karzai, was killed in a suicide bombing on September 10.

Attacks on schools have also been stepped up. According to the Afghan education ministry, there have been 158 attacks on schools this year, compared to 146 last year. The attacks on schools are believed to be due partly to the Taliban’s opposition to educating girls, as well as a way to undermine the Afghan government and it’s reconstruction efforts.

Twelve suspected militants and two Afghan police officers were reported killed on Monday in separate incidents which also left eight others and a U.S. soldier wounded.

“People are scared, of course,” Ahmad-jan’s co-worker Haidar said, “How can we feel secure when the head of our department is killed in front of her house?”
