Bed Liners For Pickup Trucks Top Options

By Alan Bullington

Bed liners for pickup trucks cushion and protect a truck bed and prevent expensive damage. The price for doing this varies widely and so does the effectiveness of the different liner options. The obvious first choice for a liner is the spray on bed liner. Other options offer advantages though as you see if you read on.

Spray on liners offer a guarantee for life which certainly has value. But have you thought that the guarantee simply means the liner will be repaired, or sprayed again? It does not imply that the liner cannot be damaged. In fact, it can be and likely will be with hard use. Spray liners are very tough coatings but are still, after all, paint coatings.

You may be tempted by the do it yourself bed liner paint option. Put one on and the cost is only a fraction of the professional version. We did it and the resulting surface looks very much like the spray coating. Beware though. It is much thinner and thus less durable. No guarantee comes with a coating you put on either. That’s mostly because careful surface preparation must be done or the paint will peel. The do it yourself option makes good sense though on battered older trucks since you get a useful coating for just a little money and time.

Have you considered plastic bed liners? For really hard use, the plastic linings can stand up to serious abuse. Especially if you want protection from impacts which make dents, a drop in bed liner works. The cost of entry makes them look like a bargain too. Just make sure you get a good fit or the wind passing over the liner will make it sing and move. The noise can be annoying but the movement can be worse. A moving plastic liner may wear away paint and make a perfect spot for rust to start. That means, look for a perfect fit and access to the drain holes for inspection.

A final liner option which often gets ignored is the simple rubber truck bed mat. These offer protection only for the bottom of the bed and not for the sides. But the protection for the bottom of the bed equals or exceeds any other option. You can forget about dents below a rubber mat and there is not even a chance of scratches either. That’s why mats over spray on liners, or plastic liners for that matter, offer distinct advantages. And the cost is so low it’s almost free.

Bed liners for pickups offer real protection for a truck bed. Spray on liners provide many advantages, but the cost prices them out for many owners. A do it yourself coating may work if you can use a thinner coat and don’t mind the work. You can also save money with a plastic liner though you must get a good fit or risk damage to the bed from the liner. Then the lowly rubber mat fits well as protection even over much more costly liners.

Fox News movie reviewer fired for downloading film

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

Editorial journalist Roger Friedman has lost his job at Fox News following a dispute with the company. Friedman admitted in a movie review late last week to having wached a bootlegged online video stream version of a partially-completed copy of the upcoming film X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation production. Friedman had worked for several years as a reviewer and media journalist for Fox News. While a press release from Fox says that the company and Friedman had “mutually agreed to part ways immediately”, news articles report that he was fired.

Friedman’s status had been ambiguous after an April 5 statement from Fox that Friedman had been fired was met by a response from the journalist that no action had been taken against him.

Friedman began his April 2 column, now removed from the Fox website, with: “Yes, I’ve seen ‘X Men Origins: Wolverine.’ It wasn’t at a screening, either. I found a work in progress print of it, 95 percent completed, on the internet last night. Let’s hope by now it’s gone.” Friedman went on to praise the ease and convenience of downloading, noting that the current box office top 10 were all available. “It’s so much easier than going out in the rain!”, he wrote.

In an exclusive statement to Wikinews, Pirate Party International‘s spokesperson Andrew Norton said: “Depending on the method he used to obtain the film, he may not have infringed copyright at all, just exercised legal fair use exceptions. When you add in the very positive review he gave the film, it makes you wonder why Fox acted as they did. The reason is painfully obvious, to ‘send a message’. Alas the only message they send is that they don’t care about facts, and let no-one stand in the way of their paranoid witch-hunt”.

Website Ain’t It Cool News editor “Beaks”, meanwhile, responded to news of Fox’s initial press release concerning Friedman’s review on April 3 with “Friedman has admitted to breaking the law. If 20th Century Fox—and the FBI—are serious about nailing the perpetrator(s) of this leak, then Friedman must be fired immediately for downloading and reviewing stolen material. There’s no wiggle room here.”

The positivity of Friedman’s review had led some commentators, Ain’t It Cool News among them, to speculate that the leak of the work print of the film had been a deliberate act by 20th Century Fox.

The full-length workprint of the film, lacking some special effects and ten minutes of footage shot after principal photography, was leaked on March 31, 2009. While 20th Century Fox adds digital forensic markings to its workprints to trace leaked versions, so far the company has not identified any party as responsible for the leak.

X Men Origins: Wolverine, a prequel to the X-Men franchise of films, premieres in theaters in the United Kingdom on April 29, Australia and New Zealand on April 30, and the United States and Canada on May 1, 2009.

Montreal mayor Michael Applebaum arrested for corruption

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Tuesday, June 18, 2013

Michael Applebaum, the current interim mayor of Montreal, Québec, Canada, was arrested at about 6am local time (1000 UTC) yesterday morning by the Unité permanente anticorruption ((en))French language: ?Permanent Anti-Corruption Unit on fourteen charges including corruption, fraud, breach of trust, and conspiracy, including reportedly a C$50,000 bribe.

Commissioner Robert Lafrenière said the alleged illegal acts occurred between 2006 and 2011 and relate to two real-estate projects in the Côte des Neiges-Notre Dame de Grâce borough. The CBC indicated one of these projects was the borough’s new 15 million dollar sports complex. Applebaum is now one of several Québec mayors who have been accused of corruption in the past few years, including the previous Montreal mayor Gérald Tremblay and Laval Mayor Gilles Vaillancourt.

Several politicians are calling on Applebaum to resign, including Québec Premier Pauline Marois, to let the city continue on with its affairs. A few others, such as Coalition Avenir Québec leader François Legault, are suggesting to put the city on a trusteeship as Laval was a few weeks ago, but Municipal Affairs Minister Sylvain Gaudreault says this will not happen, as only a few people are implicated, unlike Laval, where nearly the entire city council was implicated.

Two other people were arrested on charges related to the same real-estate deals: Saulie Zajdel, former city councillor, on five charges; and Jean-Yves Bisson, a bourough official, on four charges.

A second interim minister is to be nominated for the rest of Tremblay’s term, until the next municipal election is held in November.

Quran Education & Education Today!

by

AlexandraBrian

Quran education is the foundation of life of every Muslim. Without Quran education, you cannot become what Allah wants you to become. One of the greatest blessings of Allah (SWT) is the knowledge that he has given to man. It is knowledge only which makes the man stand out of the rest of the creatures and it is the knowledge that makes a man superior to every other creature. When Allah (SWT) created the very first human being on the face of the world, that is Hazrat Adam, he asked all the angels to bow down in front of the angels. The angels perceived it in a very different way and looked at the Hazrat Adam as being more knowledgeable than them.

Quran education guides us with the knowledge of the world and the knowledge of the world hereafter. Allah S.W.T. says in the Qur an in Sura 9, Verse 121: .let them devote themselves to studies in religion and admonish their comrades when they return to them so that they may guard themselves against evil. Imam Jaffer as-Sadiq (A.S.) has addressed the same subject: I would rather like my companions to be flogged on their heads so that they may (be compelled to) acquire religious knowledge.

The purpose of education is to replace and empty mind with an open one. It polishes the mind of the people and lets the mind grow positively. This is why Muslims have an obligation to attain education. The importance of education in the eyes of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) can be seen from the following Hadith. Our dear Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once said, Atta libul ilm faridhatol kuli Muslim. This Hadith means: Attainment of knowledge is a must for every Muslim. He called it compulsory for every Muslim to receive education so that Muslims may grow better as nation. Education is not restricted to only Quran education, but every education. Quran education is emphasized by many scholars since it is the base of every education.

F. A. Hayek was a wise scholar. Enlightening the importance of education he once said, “We shall not grow wiser before we learn that much that we have done was very foolish.” Education should not be seen in a narrow frame as a tool to get a good job or higher status in the world or career advancement. Purpose of education is much more than that. As far as these purposes are concerned, they can be classified into individual importance of education. The social frame is broader than the individual one.

Before the industrial revolution in the whole world, purpose of education was tied to learning, preparing wiser leadership and personal achievements only. Now as the world has seen rapid and revolutionary changes, so has it brought changes in the thinking pattern of the world. The educationists, philosophers, scholars now emphasize on education, which our Lord and our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) chose for us 1400 years ago.

Thai anti-government leaders escape capture

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Saturday, April 17, 2010

In a new setback to the Thai government’s efforts to ease mounting political tensions, protest leaders escaped from their hotel Friday after security forces arrived to arrest them.

One, Arisman Pongruangrong, climbed down three floors using a rope, and was rushed away by supporters thronging the building. The police say Arisman led recent rallies at the national parliament, the election commission, and satellite transmission bases.

Officials earlier Friday said the government is preparing to arrest people linked to violent clashes with security forces last Saturday.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, Thai security chief, announced the raid on the hotel as it was unfolding, saying that a Special Forces unit had closed in around a downtown Bangkok hotel.

“As I am speaking, the government’s special team is surrounding the SC Park Hotel, where we have learned that there are terrorists and some of their leaders hiding,” Suthep said.

A spokesman for the governing Democrat Party, Baranuj Smuthararaks, says arrest warrants have been issued for those suspected of being involved in the violence. Some of the suspects have been identified from photos taken during the clashes.

“Right now the government’s focusing on issuing warrants for acts of terrorism by the people who fortunately have been captured in action [in photos] by both the local and international media,” he said.

According to the New York Times, as many as five protest leaders had been staying at the same hotel as Pongruangrong. Those leaders later appeared together at a protest rally in Bangkok.

“I would like to thank all of the people who saved me,” Arisman said. “You have saved democracy.”The government says armed men infiltrated protester ranks Saturday and fired on troops trying to disperse a rally. Five soldiers and 19 protesters died during the clashes.

Thailand is facing its most severe political crisis in almost 20 years. The anti-government movement, led by the United Democratic Front against Dictatorship or UDD, demands that the government step down and call fresh elections.

UDD supporters, known as red shirts, have held protests in Bangkok for more than a month.

The UDD largely supports former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a coup in 2006 and remains overseas to avoid a jail sentence for corruption. Mr. Thaksin has strong support among the rural and urban poor, as well among some sections of the army and police.

Some parties in the governing coalition want to set a clear time frame for elections to ease tensions. But the government says it will only call elections once the political situation has cooled.

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

Lansing, Michigan airport designated ‘aerotropolis’

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Saturday, December 24, 2011

On Wednesday the Lansing, Michigan Capital Region International Airport and surrounding land was designated as an “aerotropolis” by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation Strategic Fund board. The Next Michigan Development program allows the airport to offer tax incentives in order to attract manufacturing, distribution, and technology businesses to the surrounding area.

Incentives can include property tax abatements or the elimination of most state and local taxes for a specified period of time. To qualify for the incentives, a company would have to start a new venture on airport property or expand an existing one. Additionally, companies need to use a minimum of two out of four transportation modes – freight, air, rail, or water.

The airport, in DeWitt Township, is the second in Michigan to receive an aerotropolis designation. The state’s other aerotropolis is located in the area surrounding Detroit Metropolitan and Willow Run airports. In October the city of Lansing and DeWitt Township approved a 425 tax-sharing agreement on the property, designating approximately 850 acres (344 ha) of land as available for future development.

Filed in Finance Leave a comment

Submitted by: Ronny F.

All musicians really want is the right gear for the gig. Sometimes you need beats or loops, sometimes you need electric drums and other times all you really need is a music sampler and the ability to create loops on the fly. Up till now, if you wanted all of that, you had to spend thousands of dollars and lug around multiple machines and all the cables and adapters to sync up your sound equipment.

That all changed in July when the Beat Thang was launched into the market. Created through a joint venture between Rowdy Electronics and Beat Kangz Electronics, Beat Thang is a multi-dimensional machine that s a music sampler on overdrive and gives musicians, electric drum beats, electric drum loops, rap beats and much, much more.

Inside the Beat Thang s light weight but durable exterior, beats the heart of a pro studio that musicians can use in every possible setting; whether playing live, putting down tracks in the studio or just creating rap beats and samples with the music sampler.

Packed in every Beat Thang are more than 3,000 original sounds, rap beats, loops and 65 digital effects; so the first time musicians plug it in, they have professionally mastered live performance ready tools on demand.

But Beat Thang is much more than just an electric drum machine; the onboard music sampler is equipped with some serious mixing tools so that you can create your own samples and performance loops.

Beat Thang s music sampler allows for sampling and re-sampling functions that are extremely versatile and useful, unlike the extremely limited functions of would be competitors, Akai s MPC-2500 or Roland s MV-8800. Additionally, the Key Span feature enables musicians to take multiple samples instantly.

Beat Thang has a few other features that push it far beyond any music sampler or electric drum machine out there, they include;

Dual microphone and line input/output jacks plus two USB ports that allow uploading of custom samples and sounds, rap beats, electric drum beats and runs.

The multiple media ports allow Beat Thang to be plugged directly into existing sound equipment giving seamless integration for live performance and studio settings.

Flawless integration with both Mac and PC operating systems allows complete interface for mixing and mastering; Beat Thang Virtual software gives you even more flexibility in creating your own rap beats, loops and samples.

Save rap beats, electric drum machine beats, loops, sounds, samples and mixes with 256 MB of RAM and two SD card slots and play them back with real time loading.

Onboard waveform editing and digital EFX functions make sample editing easy and fast even during a live performance.

The Beat Thang s lightweight construction and rechargeable lithium-ion battery gives six hours of plug-free play time, so musicians can take it everywhere.

Tuesday, October 27, 2015

Early yesterday afternoon local time, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Afghanistan, Pakistan and North India, with its epicenter in the Hindu Kush mountain range which stretches from Afghanistan to North Pakistan, causing damage to life and buildings. A Wikinews correspondent felt the shock waves in Behror, Rajasthan at 2:50 PM IST (0920 UTC).

Hundreds of people died in this disaster. The death toll is highest in Pakistan. Pakistani officials yesterday afternoon declared over 145 people were found dead. United States Geological Survey reported the earthquake occurred at 212km depth due to reverse faulting. Twelve students died in the rush due to trembles, in an Afghani girls’ school in Takhar, near Badakhshan. Two elderly women in Kashmir died due to heart attack. Some people in Pakistan died by crushing by roof collapse.

Indian states Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi National Capital Region were affected. Srinagar experienced a power cutoff after the earthquake.

During yesterday afternoon, Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi communicated with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, volunteering help. He also tweeted “Heard about strong earthquake in Afghanistan-Pakistan region whose tremors have been felt in parts of India. I pray for everyone’s safety.”

Yesterday evening, Pervez Rashid, Pakistani Information Minister, declared Pakistan would not ask for help for resources and rescue work and thanked India for offering help. “We have enough resources to handle the situation. Our top priority is to help those affected because of the earthquake”.

As of earlier today, officials in Pakistan and Afghanistan came up with statistics of 237 deaths in Pakistan and a total rising to 311.

Almost a decade ago, this region suffered an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6.

BBC newsreader George Alagiah has been diagnosed with bowel cancer for the second time in just under four years and is due to receive treatment, according to his agent, Mary Greenham, who said he was “in discussions with his medical team about treatment options and the way forward”.

In a statement yesterday, Sri-Lankan-born Alagiah, 62, said, “My brilliant doctors are determined to get me back to a disease-free state and I know they have the skill to do just that. […] I learned last time around how important the support of family and friends is and I am blessed in that department. I genuinely feel positive as I prepare for this new challenge.”

He later posted on Twitter, saying it was “tough dealing with disappointment”, though he “[a]lways knew the cancer could come back”.

During his previous course of treatment for the condition, which was performed when he was at stage four, Alagiah underwent three operations and had a total of eight tumors removed from his liver. Following this, he returned to presenting the BBC News at Six in November 2015.
