Mascots for Vancouver 2010 Olympics based on native mythology

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

The mascots of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia were just announced. Based on mythological characters, they are Miga, Quatchi and Sumi.

Miga, a sea bear who lives in the ocean with her family pod near Tofino, and Quatchi, a young sasquatch, represent the Olympics, while Sumi represents the Paralympics that follow afterward.

A sea bear is a First Nations creature, part killer whale, part Kermode spirit bear. While illustrated as being taller than the other characters, the mascot costume of Quatchi is the same height as the other two characters.

The third mascot, Sumi, an animal-guardian spirit, is a Thunderbird that wears the hat of an orca. Sumi will be the mascot of the Paralympics.

In 2004, the Times Colonist suggested a marmot might be a good mascot, except for their winter hibernation. The organizers still chose one, named Mukmuk, as their “virtual only” counterpart.

After the Olympic logo design was leaked the day before the 2005 announcement, organizers were extremely tight lipped until today’s news conference at a Surrey school. They apparently didn’t do any development on the characters on internet-enabled computers, to ensure the images or information wouldn’t slip out.

The characters were designed by the Vancouver and Los Angeles-based Meomi Design. Their characters have been used as part of iGoogle, a customizable homepage option from Google, as well as Electronic Arts, Girls Inc., Time Out Magazine, Cyworld, Nick Jr., Bang-on Clothing, and CBC4Kids.

The Vancouver organizers have a CDN$46-million merchandising program; previous Olympics have made as much as $100 million from mascot-related products.

René Fasel, Chairman of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Coordination Commission commented that “The IOC welcomes these imaginative new additions to the Olympic Family as they take their place on the world stage today – a symbol of the Games and of Canada. We know that when Olympians, Paralympians and visitors from around the globe arrive in British Columbia at Games time, they will fall under the spell of these captivating characters.”

The characters first appearance will be at a Bay store in the Lower Mainland; HBC is a major sponsor of the Games. They will then make their way to schools, take a break through the Christmas season, and fly to Ottawa for the Winterlude festival.

Solar-powered plane completes 26-hour flight

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Thursday, July 8, 2010

The Solar Impulse, an experimental solar-powered airplane, landed in Switzerland on Thursday after completing a successful 26-hour test flight. The flight was a proof-of-concept displaying that a solar-powered aircraft can accumulate enough power from the sun during the day to power it through the night. The team that designed and built the aircraft believes that, in theory, the plane could fly indefinitely, given that there is enough sunlight to power it.

The flight is the longest and highest flight by a piloted solar-powered aircraft, with an average altitude of about 28,000 feet, and an average speed of around 25 miles per hour. Pilot Andre Borschberg, a former fighter pilot in the Swiss air force, said “I’ve been a pilot for forty years now, but this flight has been the most incredible of my flying career. Just sitting there and watching the battery charge level rise and rise thanks to the sun. I have just flown more than 26 hours without using a drop of fuel and without causing any pollution.”

The plane can carry only one passenger, and contains 12,000 solar cells. However, the plane does have its setbacks; a blog on the project’s website reported after seventeen hours of flight that “Andre’s feeling great up there. His only complaints involve little things like a slightly sore back as well as a ten-hour period during which it was minus twenty degrees Celsius in the cockpit. That made his drinking water system freeze up and worst of all his iPod batteries die.”

The project’s intention is to show that emissions-free air travel is a feasible concept; however, the team does not believe that current propulsion methods will be replaced by alternatives in the near future.

There is a sudden spurt in the demand of Hosted PBX systems for the small and medium business enterprises. The market analysis says that the revenue for the Hosted IP PBX systems will cross $2.1 billion by the end of 2010. Everyday more and more businesses are embracing the VOIP PBX technology for their business communication.

The Hosted PBX systems offer a vast array of compelling benefits to enhance your business image. Here are the 10 most attractive advantages of Hosted IP based PBX systems for business organizations.

1.Low total cost of ownership: – The Hosted PBX systems give reduced ownership costs as there is no need to buy any expensive hardware or software. All the installation costs, purchasing costs and maintenance costs are drastically reduced as compared to the premise based PBX systems.

2.Cheaper Calls: – The call rates are much lower than the traditional phone systems. Since all the voice traffic is transferred over the IP, it greatly cuts down calling charges. You can talk as long as you want at flat prices. Calls between extensions are usually free.

3.Desired area code: – Hosted PBX service providers allow you to choose any area code for your number that is not your geographical area code. For instance, if you live in Los Angeles and you want a New York number then you can get one with the Hosted PBX. This means all the New York calls from your number will be charged as local. Thus you can save thousands of dollars on long distance calling. It is an ideal solution for business enterprises that have multiple branches in different locations.

4.No Hassles: – One of the best advantages of Hosted PBX systems is that it relieves businesses from the hassles of installing and maintaining the PBX equipments. There is no hardware or software requirement for Hosted PBX. All the data is hosted over a web interface. There is no need of expert staff to monitor and upgrade the PBX system. Thus Hosted IP PBX systems are truly hassle-free. This improves business productivity as the enterprises can focus on more important prospects.

5.Standard features: – With the traditional premise based PBX systems there were no digital features available. And if some features were available, they were charged heavy additional costs. But the Hosted PBX systems offer many calling features as standard or at little additional charges. Some of these standard calling features include call transfer, call forwarding, call waiting, call conferencing, 3-way calling, find me/follow me, speed dial, caller id and many more.

6.Advanced Calling Features: – Along with the standard calling features some exceptional advanced calling features are also available with the Hosted PBX services that can greatly optimize your business relations through communication. Features like ACD (Automatic Call Distribution), integrated auto attendant, virtual receptionist, intelligent call routing, call queue management, voicemail transcription and more are a great way to impress your callers by projecting a Fortune 500 company image.

7.Flexibility: – The unmatched flexibility of Hosted PBX systems is highly valuable for growing enterprises. Any number of extensions can be added or removed without affecting the overall phone system. If your enterprise grows from 200 employees to 2000 employees the Hosted PBX systems have the potential to meet those growing needs.

8.Security: – The Hosted PBX service providers use the latest firewalls and anti-virus software to ensure that customer data is safeguarded from eaves droppers, hackers and intruders. Moreover, encryption of data prior to transmission strengthens data security.

9.Virtual Office: – Maintaining a virtual business presence wherever you go, irrespective of time and location is now possible with Hosted PBX systems. No matter where you go, you take your phone services with you. Calls can be directed anywhere, be it an office number, home number, cell phone number or a landline number. It eliminates all the odds of a missed call. No missed call means there is no loss of a potential business opportunity.

10.Real time Collaboration: – With the Hosted PBX systems employees enjoy a real time collaborative platform that gives them seamless connectivity and smooth communication. Calls can be made and received anywhere reducing the constraints on workers. Employees can access functionalities from anywhere.

The Hosted IP PBX service providers are coming up with greater features and enhanced functionality to give business enterprises a cutting edge business phone system, with an ease of use, fully loaded with dozens of features to offer a scalable system that can transform the face of business communication.

BBC support song making chart impact

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Wednesday, November 3, 2010

A song released yesterday in support of the BBC is making an impact on several UK music charts.

Stand-up comic Mitch Benn wrote I’m Proud of the BBC in response to the criticism the licence fee-funded corporation has received from its commercial competitors and the right-wing press. The Conservative-led coalition government announced two weeks ago that the licence fee is to be frozen for six years, and that the BBC will take over responsibility from the Foreign Office for funding the World Service.

You also pay for the Fire Brigade, whether or not your house burns down. Public service.

The song, loosely inspired by Billy Joel, lists many of the BBC’s achievements. Benn, a regular on BBC Radio 4’s satirical programme The Now Show, decided to release I’m Proud of the BBC as a single after realising that it was provoking emotional responses from audiences during his nationwide tour. He told BBC Radio 5 Live that the song was receiving standing ovations, and people were wiping away tears. A video was filmed last month outside of Broadcasting House, White City and Television Centre with a cast of volunteers recruited from the social networking site Twitter.

The song was officially released as a ‘download-only’ track on Monday. Yesterday’s charts reveal that it has reached pole position on Amazon’s rock chart, and is listed as the 14th most downloaded track overall. iTunes listed it as the 64th most downloaded song. Fans have created two Facebook groups to promote the single in an attempt to get it to a good position in the UK Singles Chart, which would force the BBC’s commercial rivals to play the track.

Benn says that he has always been a supporter of the BBC, and yesterday compared it to the emergency services. “You also pay for the Fire Brigade, whether or not your house burns down. Public service.” He points out that he only receives a small percentage of his income from the corporation; last night he played with his band The Distractions at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London.

Paul McCartney slams Chinese fur practices, rules out future concerts in China

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Monday, November 28, 2005

Legendary musician Sir Paul McCartney has boycotted China in response to a preview of BBC news footage that was filmed undercover at a fur market in Guangzhou, China. The footage, some of which is to air during BBC’s Six O’Clock News at 18:00 GMT on November 28, 2005, shows animals (particularly dogs and cats) being thrown from the top of buses and being dropped into boiling water. McCartney’s wife, Heather, also watched the footage and alleged that some footage she had seen clearly showed that the animals were alive when they were skinned. The footage, which was filmed by an investigator connected to the animal rights group PETA, shows cats squirming in a bag before being thrown into boiling water, and then skinned in a laundrette drier-like machine.

McCartney slammed the practices, saying, “It’s like something out of the Dark Ages. And they seem to get a kick out of it. They’re just sick, sick people,” referring to the apparent smiles and laughter of the workers handling the animals as they are killed.

He and his wife called for a boycott of Chinese goods, adding that this was unacceptable behaviour from the nation to host the next Olympics.

However, the Chinese Ambassador to London’s spokesperson said that China is not to blame. “The fur trade mostly feeds markets in the US and Europe. This fur is not consumed in China. So the Americans and Europeans should accept the blame.”

Greed And Fear: Common Stock Trading Traps And How To Avoid Them}

Filed in Crafts Leave a comment

Submitted by: Ethan McRae

Greed and fear are the two dominant emotions that affect the stock market. Although there are many other factors that influence the change in stock price, these two emotions are the underlying cause for the unpredictable fluctuation of stock price. As emotional creatures, humans make trade decisions all the time based on their feelings about the given market conditions. However, trading decisions influenced by emotions of greed and fear and stock trading success are two things that generally dont go hand in hand.

So how do these emotions really influence the individual traders decisions? More importantly, how can a trader avoid emotional trading?

Holding a stock in fear as it drops in price is a classic way traders lose money.

Say the typical trader buys a stock and it slowly goes down for a few days after the purchase. The trader is a bit worried but he still keeps his composer because he is certain that the stock will come back up. He holds for a few more days and the stock continues to inch downward. At this point the trader has lost a large percent of his original position.

Now the panic starts to kick in

The trader begins to panic but he doesnt sell off because this is too much of a loss to bear. He can’t afford to lose such a large chunk of his portfolio especially since he thinks the stock will come back up any day. The trader is praying that it will bounce back up just enough so he can at least break even. Yet as he clings to his position in fear, stock continues to fall. Finally he sells the stock partially out of fear that it will drop even lower and also because he cant bear the pain of holding the failing positions anymore.

This is a prime example of how the fear affects traders. Holding onto a stock because you have a hunch that the price will bounce back up is a dangerous way to interact with the stock market. Because of the markets unpredictable nature, you can never be completely certain of what might happen next.

So how would the greed influence this same unfortunate trader?

Keep in mind that after the trader lost such a large sum of money, he wants to earn it back as quickly as possible. Eager to find opportunities to make the most money back to cover his loss, he searches for riskier stocks. After running some scans he spots a penny stock that is moving ten, twenty, even 30 percent every day. With moves like this the trader figures that he could make back the money and more in the next week.

This particular stocks price pattern is extremely volatile and sporadic. The trader has no way to gauge where the price might move next. However, the trader still impulsively takes a position while holding onto the belief that the stock will make him a fortune. The trader is completely engrossed in the prospect of making a large sum of money in such a short amount of time. Because he was so eager and impatient, the trader had placed his trade without assessing any of the safer, more predictable stocks.

Nevertheless, the stock does not make him a fortune. The stock abruptly reverses downward in the next few days.

These are two classic scenarios of how many traders play the market. They let their emotions get the best of them and their trading success suffers as a result. Making trading decisions influenced by greed and fear will never produce profitable results.

So how do you take the emotions of greed and fear out of trading? The answer is simple. Lay out a solid strategy and stick to it.

This of course is often easier said than done. However, trading in a strict and systematic way limits the emotional element of trading significantly. Disciplined trading according to a plan is the antidote to emotional trading.

As mentioned before, trading based on predictions and emotion never leads to a profitable outcome. This is why sticking to a strategy is so important.

Stop-losses in particular are extremely important components in the strategy. When a stock hits your stop-loss it is extremely tempting to ignore it thinking a reversal is right around the corner. However, the truth is that you just dont know if its going to go up. When the stock hits your stop-loss, simply step back and take you position out of the market. If you made some profit off of the stock then thats great. If you lost some money, just wait and see if you get another buy signal from the stock and step back in.

French workers use threats in compensation demand

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Friday, July 17, 2009Following similar threats by workers at New Fabris and Nortel, workers at JLG in Tonneins, France, threatened to blow up several platform cranes. The JLG factory announced in April 2009 that it will fire 53 of its 163 workers by the end of 2009, while the remaining 110 jobs will not be secure over the next 2 years.

JLG Tonneins was acquired in 2006 with its parent JLG Industries, a maker of aerial work platforms, by the U.S.-based Oshkosh Corporation. Despite being hugely profitable in the past, production has been much reduced since 2008 with the contraction of the construction industry and lower demand for its products. Despite excellent past results the new American management demanded sweeping cuts at the company.

In the view of locals, “the company’s actions are a disgrace given the expensive perks, such as official cars, for its corporate fat cats, compared to the sacrifice, silence, and dignity demanded by the company of those it has made redundant.”

The management offered severance pay of 3,000 (US $4,200), however the workers demanded a severance package commensurate with “the wealth that their labor has generated.” Worker’s delegates requested a “supra-legal” payment of € 30,000, on Thursday 16 of July the management responded with a counter offer of € 16,000. On Thursday night the worker’s actions secured the € 30,000 settlement initially demanded.
