BBC support song making chart impact

A song released yesterday in support of the BBC is making an impact on several UK music charts.

Stand-up comic Mitch Benn wrote I’m Proud of the BBC in response to the criticism the licence fee-funded corporation has received from its commercial competitors and the right-wing press. The Conservative-led coalition government announced two weeks ago that the licence fee is to be frozen for six years, and that the BBC will take over responsibility from the Foreign Office for funding the World Service.

You also pay for the Fire Brigade, whether or not your house burns down. Public service.

The song, loosely inspired by Billy Joel, lists many of the BBC’s achievements. Benn, a regular on BBC Radio 4’s satirical programme The Now Show, decided to release I’m Proud of the BBC as a single after realising that it was provoking emotional responses from audiences during his nationwide tour. He told BBC Radio 5 Live that the song was receiving standing ovations, and people were wiping away tears. A video was filmed last month outside of Broadcasting House, White City and Television Centre with a cast of volunteers recruited from the social networking site Twitter.

The song was officially released as a ‘download-only’ track on Monday. Yesterday’s charts reveal that it has reached pole position on Amazon’s rock chart, and is listed as the 14th most downloaded track overall. iTunes listed it as the 64th most downloaded song. Fans have created two Facebook groups to promote the single in an attempt to get it to a good position in the UK Singles Chart, which would force the BBC’s commercial rivals to play the track.

Benn says that he has always been a supporter of the BBC, and yesterday compared it to the emergency services. “You also pay for the Fire Brigade, whether or not your house burns down. Public service.” He points out that he only receives a small percentage of his income from the corporation; last night he played with his band The Distractions at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London.

Ways To Avoid Worrying About Ovi

Are you someone who is always the life of the party? Do you like to be social and always be out and about somewhere? Is life pretty good for you these days? One of the quickest ways to ruin all of those good things is to be picked up for OVI. If you are in a position of having to hire an OVI attorney, it will cost you money, influence your social life and maybe even impact your ability to get credit or land a new job. One of the best ways to avoid being in a position to need an OVI lawyer is to never drive after you have been drinking.

A while ago, it did not seem like there were many options for people who wanted to go out and have a few drinks with their friends. However, as the dangers of drunk driving have become more serious, many different options have become available.

One of the best ways to ensure that everyone gets home safely and without the fear of being picked up for OVI is to always designate a designated driver. This is someone in your group of friends whose turn it is to drive everyone home. One of the great things about this is that many of the social clubs you may be going to have special programs for people who are the designated drivers. A lot of times, if you can identify yourself as the driver, you will get all of the soda and juice that you want for free for the entire evening.

The best way to start the evening off is by having everyone meet at the designated spot or by having the driver pick everyone up. It is a bad idea for everyone to drive to the meeting place because people will be tempted to drive home. Then your friends will be put into a position of having to argue with you about your ability to drive. In order to avoid this potential problem, it is best to make sure that nobody but the driver has easy access to a car. Another option to avoid having to worry about driving home is to call a cab. Everyone that plans on going out for the evening should have the name of several cab companies programmed into your phone. Some people complain that this is too expensive to be a realistic option, but when you compare a $20 cab ride to a possible $2000 fine, a few days in jail and a permanent black mark on your record, it does not seem that bad.

Many social clubs have also started their own programs to help people get home safely. They can be held responsible for accidents that happen caused by people who were in their bar so it is in their best interest to keep you safe too. Another option is to look at public transportation. Make sure you have a bus schedule mapped out ahead of time of your evening out. It may take you a little longer to get home, but you will get there safe and sound.

California meat packing firm recalls 143M pounds of beef

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Sunday, February 17, 2008

I am dismayed at the in-humane handling of cattle that has resulted in the violation of food safety regulations at the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company.

In a press release today, California-based Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. indicated that it has voluntarily recalled just over 143 million pounds (65 million kilograms) of raw and frozen beef products, which is considered to be the largest single recall of beef products in U.S. history. The move follows an investigation by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) into allegations of animal cruelty and mishandling of cattle destined for the human food chain.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) had determined that beef products produced by the Chino, California company were unfit for human consumption as the cattle had not received “complete and proper inspection.”

The recall has been designated as Class II, which the USDA describes as “a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.”

On Friday, Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer indicated that charges had been laid against employees of the plant alleged to have taken part in the mistreatment of cattle. “Today [Friday], the San Bernardino District Attorney filed felony animal cruelty charges against two employees who were terminated by Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company,” said Schafer. “It is regrettable that these animals were mistreated and I am encouraged and supportive of these actions by the San Bernardino District Attorney in response to this mistreatment.”

The USDA learned of the possible inhumane handling of non-ambulatory (disabled) cattle at the packing plant on January 30 and has since suspended activities at the plant. “We continue to conduct a thorough investigation into whether any violations of food safety or additional humane handling regulations have occurred,” said Secretary Schafer in a press release. “On February 8, our Office of the Inspector General took the lead on the investigation. At that time, USDA extended the administrative hold on Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company products for the National School Lunch Program, the Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations while the investigation continues,” said Schafer.

The FSIS reported that Hallmark/Westland had not contacted the FSIS public health veterinarian, as required, when cattle became ill or disabled after undergoing ante-mortem (slaughter) inspection, putting the company out of compliance with FSIS regulations. “Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection FSIS has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall,” explained Secretary Schafer.

The cruelty charges stem from an undercover video that reportedly showed sick cattle being moved by crews using forklifts.

“Words cannot accurately express how shocked and horrified I was at the depictions contained on the video that was taken by an individual who worked at our facility from October 3 thru November 14, 2007,” said Steve Mendell, President, Westland Meat Co. and Hallmark Meat Packing. “We have taken swift action regarding the two employees identified on the video and have already implemented aggressive measures to ensure all employees follow our humane handling policies and procedures. We are also cooperating with the USDA investigators on the allegations of inhumane handling treatment which is a serious breech of our company’s policies and training.”

The USDA stressed that it is “extremely unlikely” that the cattle involved were at risk for Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad-cow disease due to the employment of multiple safeguards. The USDA felt the recall was required, however, as the plant had allegedly violated USDA regulations.

The recall involves raw and frozen beef products produced on various dates from February 1, 2006 to February 2, 2008. For further information about the recall, consumers, media, and distributors are encouraged to contact Hallmark/Westland’s Plant Manager Stan Mendell or Food Safety Consultant Steve Sayer at (909) 590-3340 or the FSIS website, www.fsis.usda.gov.

Sunflower oil saves at-risk newborns from infection

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Saturday, March 5, 2005Simply massaging low birth weight babies with sunflower seed oil can protect them from potentially fatal infections.

Infections and complications from preterm birth cause more than half of all neonatal deaths, and very low birth weight babies are particularly vulnerable.

Preterm babies have immature skin that lacks a protective film called vernix that has antimicrobial properties.

In some countries, such as India, newborns are routinely massaged with mustard oil.

But mustard oil, says Gary Darmstadt of John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, can delay recovery of the skin barrier and have a toxic effect on skin.

Seeking an alternative low-cost product, Darmstadt and colleagues experimented with sunflower oil and an ointment called Aquaphor that comprises petrolatum, mineral oil, mineral wax and lanolin.

The researchers tested the treatments on 497 newborns (72 hours old or less) and preterm babies (less than 33 weeks gestation) between 1998 and 2003 in Bangladesh.

They applied the treatments to the entire body besides the scalp and face three times daily for the first 14 days and then twice daily until discharge.

Babies treated with sunflower oil were found 41% less likely to develop infections than controls.

“Evidence is emerging that the skin is much more important as a barrier to infection than previously recognized, particularly in preterm infants whose skin is underdeveloped,” says Darmstadt. “The good news is that treatment is available to strengthen the function of the skin as a barrier in these vulnerable newborns.”

J Query For Beginners}

jquery is library written in javascript to ease your javascript code. jQuery greatly simplifies JavaScript programming along with easy-to-use API that works across a multitude of browsers which saves time which you would spend on bunch of complicated codes of javascript, like ajax calls,dom manipulation,each loops,etc. The jQuery syntax is tailor-made for selecting HTML elements and performing some action on the element(s).

Basic syntax is: $(selector).action()

Examples:

$(this).hide() – hides the current element.

$(“p”).hide() – hides all elements.

jQuery selectors are one of the most important parts of the jQuery library. jQuery selectors allow you to select and manipulate HTML element(s). jQuery selectors are used to “find” (or select) HTML elements based on their name, id, classes, types, attributes, values of attributes and much more. All selectors in jQuery start with the dollar sign and parentheses: $().

Example:

When a user clicks on a button, all elements will be hidden:

$(document).ready(function(){

$(“button”).click(function(){

$(“p”).hide();

});

});

As we all know JQuery become much popular over a long period of time but for beginners who have started getting their hands in JQuery, there are some basic things you need to know first:-

JQuery is a fast, small, and feature-rich JavaScript library.

JQuery was released by John Resig in 2006 and is currently being utilized by over 31% of the most popular websites on the internet, thus it has gained popularity.

The most advantageous thing about JQuery is its open source and not only that it is also dual – licensed under the MIT License and GNU general public license V2. This means any developer can create a JQuery plug-in of their own.

JQuery takes a lot of common tasks that require many lines of JavaScript code to accomplish, and wraps them into methods that you can call with a single line of code.

JQuery also simplifies a lot of the complicated things from JavaScript, like AJAX calls and DOM manipulation.

Last but not the least there are bunches of JQuery plug-ins out there which you may require for any of your task.

The best feature in JQuery is that the team of developers who had developed it had a vast knowledge of cross-browser compatibility and they have fixed most parts of it and they are on with it following with the updates. JQuery runs exactly same on all major and minor browsers, including IE6.

If you are planning to use any kind of designing frameworks such as bootstrap or Zurb foundation you are going to require JQuery. Lets compare normal javascript vs JQuery:

Normal javascript:

document.getElementById(“myBtn”).addEventListener(“click”,function()

{

alert(“Hello World!”);

});

Jquery:

$(“#myBtn”).click(function()

{

alert(“Hello World!”);

});

This is how JQuery reduces your effort of writing long javascript code and saves your time. You could run JQuery on any client that supports HTML & Javascript , i.e. All modern desktops, smartphones, laptops, and any future device which supports html and javascript. We develop our projects in php, php MVC frameworks like Codeigniter, Magento and WordPress. So we use Jquery and apply to different kinds of frameworks endpoints and communicate it to the frontpoint via HTTP, so in future if we have to work on python or any other language so all we need to do is work on our server side framework. It is also better for SEO (search engine optimization) because in this everything is in text instead of flash.

So far we have seen the advantages of JQuery but as we all know everything has a weakness and so does JQuery too. Lets hav a look at it:

Limited functionality:

As we know JQuery has the best documentation and a large community of opensource developers and impressive number of libraries but it depends on how much customization you require on your web application because in some cases its functionality is limited so you may have to use raw javascript.

Dependency:

Dependency is a weakness which most of the people dont almost like because in order to run JQuery Commands the JQuery javascript file is a compulsory Requirement , although the size of JQuery production version is small maybe 25-100KB.

Vestas protesters sacked with immediate effect

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Thursday, July 30, 2009

Eleven of the 25 workers at the Vestas factory in Newport, Isle of Wight, England who have been carrying out a sit-in since Monday July 20 have been sacked with immediate effect.

According to one of the protesters known as “Mike”, the occupiers were given their dismissal notices concealed under slices of their evening meal of pizza. The company said that the protesters have had ample opportunity to air their point of view, and had no choice but to sack eleven of the twenty five workers that they had positively identified; and that given that the fact that the action constituted a “fundamental breach” of trust, that the eleven would not be entitled to redundancy packages. A press release from the company said that Vestas “saw no other choice than to dismiss the 11 employees, who the company has positively identified as the employees currently participating in the occupation of the factory.”

The protesters remained upbeat, vowing to continue their occupation and have called upon the UK government to save the 625 jobs and to nationalise the Danish owned factory. Occupier Ian Terry told the BBC that if the occupiers are forced out, they plan to leave the building “peacefully”.

Vestas management were dealt a setback today in ending the occupation as Newport County Court ruled that the papers accusing the occupiers of aggravate trespass and requiring they surrender the office they occupy by July 29 were improperly served. The case has been adjourned until Tuesday August 4. In court, Judge Graham White said he was “distinctly uncomfortable” with what he perceived as Vestas’ effort to “get around the rules” in retaking the factory from the occupiers.

Legal representation for the Vestas workers had been offered by Bob Crow, secretary of the RMT trade union. Crow has pledged the “full solidarity” of the RMT and seven other unions with the workers occupying the plant.

Vestas management has also been providing the occupiers with hot meals in an apparent response to Crow’s announcement, made on July 24, that the RMT was planning on airlifting food into the factory by helicopter. Crow is meeting today with Ed Miliband, the Environment Minister.

Earlier in the week, Miliband pledged £6 million in funding to an expansion of Vestas’ Isle of Wight research and development centre, which currently employs 110 workers and could, said the Minister, be expanded to employ 40 more.

Rallies continued throughout the week in support of the Vestas occupiers. Since the occupation began, the Vestas workers have received declarations of support and solidarity from a wide swathe of the British left, including but not limited to: political parties Green Party, Respect, the Socialist Party, the Socialist Workers Party, the Alliance for Workers Liberty, and the Communist Party of Britain; the TUCG group, which brings together the BFAWU, FBU, NAPO, NUJ, PCS, POA, RMT, and URTU; and environmental groups Greenpeace, the Campaign against Climate Change, Climate Camp, and Workers’ Climate Action, who claims credit for initiating the campaign to occupy the factory. Attendees of the Big Green Gathering, a large annual environmentalist rally which was due to take place starting today but was suddenly canceled on Sunday, are being encouraged to go to the Isle of Wight and take part in support rallies for Vestas instead.

Speaking to Wikinews about the “redgreen” coalition supporting the occupation, a spokesman for the Alliance for Workers’ Liberty said: “We think this struggle is important on at least three grounds — it is central to the struggle for jobs, it is central to the struggle for the environment, and it is central to the struggle for rebuilding the labour movement.”

Photographs shared with Wikinews by the occupiers show the occupiers, mostly young men, talking, carrying out everyday tasks, and keeping in touch with the outside world via mobile phones. The use of mobile telephones in the Vestas occupation has given the press remarkable access to the occupiers and provided an effective platform for relaying their demands and feelings to the media. In contrast, Vestas’s designated media contact for the United Kingdom is on vacation. Attempts to reach Vestas Newport factory manager Patrick Weir, whom a Vestas representative at the company’s Danish headquarters stated was handling press inquiries regarding the occupation, received no reply.

Vestas plans to close the factory on July 31, citing the difficulties of obtaining planning permission for wind farms in the United Kingdom. All blades manufactured at Vestas’ Newport plant are sent to the United States. 1900 employees of the company in Northern Europe face job losses, 625 of them in Vestas’s plants in the south of England.

Sam Brownback on running for President, gay rights, the Middle East and religion

Sam Brownback is perplexed. The U.S. Senator from Kansas and Presidential candidate is a Republican whose politics—he is against marriage for gay people, he is against abortion, and he has a clean image in a party tainted by scandal—should speak favorably to the party’s base. But it has not. “I’m baffled by that myself,” Senator Brownback told Wikinews reporter David Shankbone. “We haven’t been able to raise money.”

A recent poll in Iowa has put him in eighth place, with 2% supporting his campaign. “If we don’t finish fourth or better in Iowa…we’ll pull out.”

Senator Brownback’s relationship with God infuses almost every answer you find below. Although he doesn’t feel “competent” to explain why God would dislike gays, he does feel strongly that allowing two men or two women to enter into the union of marriage will destroy it for heterosexuals. Pointing to the research of Stanley Kurtz at the Hoover Institution, Brownback asserts that Northern Europeans have “taken the sacredness out of the institution.”

In the interview, Senator Brownback discusses the tug-and-pull that befalls him when his constituents show up at his office and say, “Look, I’m a conservative, but we need this bridge, we need this subsidy, we need this hospital.” Brownback feels this spending system needs to be changed; however, when it comes to energy policy, Brownback is there for his constituents. David Shankbone asked the Kansas Senator, a supporter of cellulosic ethanol, why he doesn’t support the lowering of tariffs on sugar since sugar ethanol delivers 8 times the energy output of cellulosic ethanol. Brazil, in particular, has become energy independent because of its sugar ethanol program. It’s cheaper to produce, and there is vastly more bang for the buck in sugar fuel than in corn fuel; an entire country no longer needs to import oil because of it. Federal tariffs currently make sugar ethanol too expensive in the United States. “You’re going to kill the ethanol industry here just as it gets going,” was Senator Brownback’s response. However, there is a debate over whether the process to make corn ethanol uses more energy than the ethanol itself produces.

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Senator Sam Brownback.

Some Principles Of Septic Tank Maintenance In Quakertown, Pa

Filed in Hydraulic Equipment Leave a comment

byadmin

You need to make sure that your septic tank remains in good shape. Your septic tank collects all of the waste that goes down your drains. The waste is then separated into three different components. The waste is separated into a top layer of oil, a middle layer of water, and a bottom layer of solid waste. If the septic tank becomes damaged or clogged, the waste will begin to leak into your house. You’ll see sewage entering into your yard or backing up into your house. Good septic tank maintenance involves keeping an eye on what is going down your drains as well as watching the drainfield.

Watch the Drainfield

As stated earlier, your septic tank leaches the middle layer of water into your yard at a controlled pace. That layer of water drains into what is called the drainfield. The drainfield is made of a filtering substance such as sand plus microbes that compost the waste. If the drainfield is not working properly, you will start to see sewage backing up into your yard. If you see or smell waste in your yard, call a professional for septic tank maintenance in Quakertown, PA.

George C Allen & Son Inc is the type of company that does great septic tank work. They will be able to clean and repair your drainfield.

Watch the Drains

You should not flush anything into your septic tank that will kill the healthy microbes growing in the tank. The septic tank is very similar to a compost bin in that there are microbes in there that eat the harmful bacteria. It’s an anaerobic decomposition process but it’s still important. Good septic tank maintenance means not flushing chemicals that are harmful to your septic tank or to the balance of microbes inside the tank that help decompose the waste.
