State Farm Insurance allegedly destroying papers

Zach Scruggs, a lawyer for United States Senator Trent Lott, says that State Farm Insurance Company is destroying records related to claims for damage from Hurricane Katrina.

The records allegedly contain information saying that State Farm fraudulently denied insurance claims made by its policy holders, including Lott, that had homes there were damaged or destroyed when Hurricane Katrina came ashore on the Gulf Coast.

Scruggs said that Lott has “good faith belief” that many employees of the insurance company in Biloxi, Mississippi are destroying engineer’s reports that were inconclusive as to whether or not water or wind was the main cause of damage to the buildings affected by the hurricane.

Lott is among thousands of home and/or business owners who had their property damaged or destroyed during the hurricane and had their claims denied because State Farm claimed that their policies don’t cover damage caused by floods or water that was driven by the wind.

State Farm has not issued a statement on the matter so far.

Ethics debate surrounds surgery to stunt disabled girl’s growth

An ethical controversy has surged in the United States and elsewhere around nine-year-old Ashley X (her family name has not been released). The disabled girl was operated upon at the request of her parents, to prevent her from growing, menstruating and developing breasts. The parents, who wish to remain anonymous, explain their situation on a blog entitled The “Ashley Treatment”. There have been over 1000 reactions on the blog so far.

Ashley suffers a condition termed static encephalopathy with marked global developmental deficits of unknown etiology, which means brain damage of unknown cause leading to a kind of static condition. She can make sounds, move her arms and kick her legs, but she cannot change her position, eat, walk, talk etc. Many of these children are in poor health and die young, but Ashley is in good health. For all of these functions she depends on her caregivers. Most of the day she passes watching her surrounding, lying on a pillow. Her parents call her their “Pillow Angel”, “since she is so sweet and stays right where we place her—usually on a pillow.”

Quote

Ashley can continue to delight in being held in our arms and will be moved and taken on trips more frequently and will have more exposure to activities and social gatherings.

-Ashley’s Mom and Dad

Ashley’s parents want to keep her at home and care for her themselves, and they want to guarantee their daughter’s quality of life. To this end, they say, Ashley underwent several surgical procedures and medical treatments during a period of three years. To attenuate her growth, Ashley was given high doses of the hormone estrogen. Ashley now measures 4ft 5 (1m 35cm) and weighs around 75 lbs (34 kg), which is below her expected length and weight. Her low body weight and size would improve her comfort, and at the same time facilitate the work of her caregivers.

Surgery to remove her uterus (a procedure called a hysterectomy) and breast buds were performed, so Ashley does not menstruate and will not develop breasts, both of which parents think only would cause her discomfort. Since high estrogen levels can cause menstrual bleeding and breast development, the surgery was also meant to limit these effects. She also underwent surgery to remove her appendix, because it would be difficult to diagnose appendicitis given Ashley’s low communication possibilities.

David Witt, father-in-law of Floyd Landis, the winner of the 2006 Tour De France, has died. Witt was found dead in his car in a parking garage on August 16. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, San Diego Police said. He was 57.

Witt who was married to Rose, the mother of Amber, Floyd Landis’ wife, introduced Amber to Landis. Witt was an amateur cyclist who became friends with Landis after having the same coach. At one time, they were even roommates.

Witt and his wife co-own the “Hawthorn’s” restaurant in San Diego and it is adorned with Landis memorabilia, including his jerseys and magazine covers. The two had also attended the Tour de France where they witnessed Floyd’s victory.

Floyd Landis did win the 2006 Tour de France, but the result is contested after he tested positive in a doping test. He is widely expected to be stripped of the title.

BBC announces pay freeze and no bonuses for managers

More than 400 senior managers within the United Kingdom’s BBC, which employs around 28,500 people, have been told that they face a real-terms pay cut as bonuses and pay rises are scrapped this financial year.

Tuesday’s announcement said that bonuses will not now be paid and pay rates will stay fixed until 2010. The BBC’s executive management board, including Director-General Mark Thompson, his deputy Mark Byford and the Director of BBC Vision Jana Bennett did not take their bonuses for 2009 and have already had their pay frozen. Senior staff will have their bonus plan abandoned whilst junior staff have been told to expect any pay increases to be modest.

The BBC is under budget constraints after receiving a licence fee settlement below the amount management felt it required. Coupled with the effects of the credit crunch, the BBC is believed to need to find £1.7bn in savings between now and 2013 but has seen a further £450m shortfall develop. Initial plans to sell important BBC buildings have been put on hold since the falls in the property market in 2008. The planned pay freeze could save £20 million but risks angering unions who are seeking a general increase of £1,800 per person. Gerry Morrissey of BECTU, the broadcasting union, has already mentioned the possibility of industrial action. He told Sky News, “We have never been in favour of bonuses being paid so believe this should happen every year, and the money go towards eradicating low pay.”

The Press Association quotes Mark Thompson as telling staff “A strategic contingency exercise, led by a senior group of managers, has been looking at what additional funds are needed should we need to put aside additional funds to cover our current estimate of the financial risks we face… We need to be in as strong a position as possible if we are to deliver distinctive content and meet our key strategic projects, such as moving to the new Broadcasting House, moving network production to the nations and funding our broadband future.”

The pay freeze will not affect the Corporation’s highest paid on-air talent, who are on individual contracts.

Fifth bomb discovered in London after July 21 attacks

A suspect package discovered in Little Wormwood Scrubs, west London is apparently a fifth bomb made to the same design as those used in the 21 July attacks. The device was subjected to controlled explosion by the police over the weekend and its discovery has led to speculation that a fifth bombing attempt may have been intended that day. The device was apparently a nail bomb.

Little Wormwood Scrubs is just north of Shepherd’s Bush (scene of one of Thursday’s bombing attempts) and White City (the location of the BBC’s TV centre). It also borders on North Pole sidings, which are used by the Eurostar cross-channel train which travels through the Channel Tunnel.

Wikinews interviews John Wolfe, Democratic Party presidential challenger to Barack Obama

U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate John Wolfe, Jr. of Tennessee took some time to answer a few questions from Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Wolfe, an attorney based out of Chattanooga, announced his intentions last year to challenge President Barack Obama in the Democratic Party presidential primaries. So far, he has appeared on the primary ballots in New Hampshire, Missouri, and Louisiana. In Louisiana, he had his strongest showing, winning 12 percent overall with over 15 percent in some congressional districts, qualifying him for Democratic National Convention delegates. However, because certain paperwork had not been filed, the party stripped Wolfe of the delegates. Wolfe says he will sue the party to receive them.

Wolfe will compete for additional delegates at the May 22 Arkansas primary and the May 29 Texas primary. He is the only challenger to Obama in Arkansas, where a May 10 Hendrix College poll of Democrats shows him with 38 percent support, just short of the 45 percent for Obama. Such an outing would top the margin of Texas prison inmate Keith Russell Judd, who finished 18 percent behind Obama with 41 percent in the West Virginia Democratic primary; the strongest showing yet against the incumbent president. Despite these prospects, the Democratic Party of Arkansas has already announced that if Wolfe wins any delegates in their primary, again, due to paperwork, the delegates will not be awarded. Wolfe will appear on the Texas ballot alongside Obama, activist Bob Ely, and historian Darcy Richardson, who ended his campaign last month.

Wolfe has previously run for U.S. Congress as the Democratic Party’s nominee. On his campaign website, he cites the influence “of the Pentagon, Wall Street, and corporations” on the Obama administration as a reason for his challenge, believing these negatively affect “loyal Americans, taxpayers and small businesses.” Wolfe calls for the usage of anti-trust laws to break up large banks, higher taxes on Wall Street, the creation of an “alternative federal reserve” to assist community banks, and the implementation of a single-payer health care system.

With Wikinews, Wolfe discusses his campaign, the presidency of Barack Obama, corporations, energy, the federal budget, immigration, and the nuclear situation in Iran among other issues.

Car Insurance In Ten Minutes

Filed in Insurance Leave a comment

byAlma Abell

All over the world in most countries (at least in theory) if you drive a car you need insurance for it. Clearly, organizing your car insurance is not the most exciting subject in the world; I am told that the drying of certain colors of paint is more stimulating to watch. Having said that, the fact remains whether you live in Harrisburg PA, downtown Barcelona or the Watford gap in the UK, car insurance in Harrisburg PA or any where in UK is a legally binding responsibility that you as the registered owner of the vehicle have to take care of. This begs the obvious question……

Why do you have to have car insurance?

In the US the average weight of a car is about two tons, in Europe it is about 1.5 tons when the vehicle is travelling at 50-60mph it can have a big impact on other vehicles. In addition the simple fact is that on a long enough timeline anything is possible. This means that no matter how careful or experienced a driver you may be an accident of one kind or another is possible. Car insurance is a mechanism that protects you, the passengers, the vehicle and any damage to property which results from the results of any accident. Car insurance provides financial recompense in these scenarios by insuring drivers from Harrisburg PA to Shanghai and back again against their liability to the property of other drivers.

How much is my car insurance?

There is no simple answer to this question, there really are too many variables to say that if you have X car you will pay Y insurance. Any insurance company will consider the following points:

1. What type of car and the age and experience of the named driver(s)2. Is the car in a garage or not?3. How many named drivers are going to be using the vehicle4. What is the car going to be used for5. What is your claims history? That is how much no claims bonus do you have?

Within this framework further variables include previous traffic offences, covering anything from jumping a red light to drink driving. The latter is probably about the worst thing you can do behind the wheel of a car. I essence the more serious the offence and/or the more accidents you have been involved in, the higher the premium.

Worn Out Tires Are Extremely Hazardous On The Road

Filed in Parts And Accessories Leave a comment

By Jacqueline Star

Did you know that according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nine percent of all cars on the road in the United States are being driven on at least one bald tire? Cars with worn tires are extremely dangerous and could potentially be involved in fatal accidents and spin-outs. It is even considered illegal to drive with bald tires in many states. Bald tires aren’t just dangerous to the driver but to everyone else sharing the road.

Uneven wear on tires may be an indication that the car is out of alignment. Having your auto’s tires rotated on a frequent basis is important in order to make sure that they wear evenly and it is highly recommended to have tire pressure checked out from time to time. Going on the road with worn out tires is even more dangerous when it rains because when tires are worn out, the grooves aren’t deep enough in order to channel out water and this can lead to hydroplaning which is very dangerous. Hydroplaning is when tires loose traction and the car no longer responds to the steering wheel, the brakes or the driver. If your car does hydroplane, the safest thing to do is to remove your feet from the gas pedal in order to gain control.

A simple test to determine if you need new tires is by inserting a penny into the grooves of your tire at the lowest point. If Abraham Lincoln’s head is covered by the tire tread then your tires are good but if the tread does not cover Abraham Lincoln’s head then that means that the tires need to be replaced. A second way to tell if you need new tires is by sticking a tread-depth gauge into the grooves and observing how much tread there is left. Tire pressure can be checked by utilizing a tire pressure gauge. Certain gas stations may also have tire pressure gauges available. You can find out the correct pressure your vehicle requires in the owner’s manual.

If you are on a budget you can buy used tires and use them for a while until you get new ones. It’s important to always put your best and newest tires on the back because loss of traction on the front tire can be compensated by slowing down, whereas it is much more difficult for the average driver to compensate for a loss of traction on the rear wheels. It is also important to match up tires since mismatched ones can be unpredictable, especially in winter time.

We all know to wear our safety belts and not to talk on our cell phones while driving but many neglect our tires. Tires are extremely important because the entire foundation of your vehicle rests on your tires. So make sure your tires aren’t worn out and be sure to check the date on your tires when you purchase them and be safe out there on the road. Driving with bald tires is almost as hazardous as driving with your eyes closed; you never know what can happen.

Fire breaks out in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Australia

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Fire broke out in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, on the outskirts of Sydney, Australia, at approximately 5pm on Sunday 21st January 2007. The site of the fire is inaccessible terrain in the Bobbin Head/Apple Tree Bay area.

For a time properties were threatened in Mount Ku-ring-gai, but this danger has now passed. The F3 freeway and northern train line were closed, causing freeway traffic to be banked up. The morning saw delayed traffic on the F3, which was briefly opened, but for the most part traffic was diverted onto the Pacific Highway at the Berowra Exit.

Around midday the F3 Freeway and Pacific Highway were closed until further notice, severing Sydney’s northern vehicular links. During Monday afternoon the railway line was closed. Traffic for the north was being routed inland via Wisemans Ferry Road, though Windsor. The Pacific Highway, F3 and railway line reopened at 6pm. Welfare centres have been opened for commuters who cannot get home. They are located at Berowra Community Centre (north of the fire) and Thornleigh Baptist Community Centre (south of the fire).

Overnight backburning along with a direct attack has seen the main threat dissipate with the southern fire front under control. On Monday morning spot fires continue to move north towards Cowan Creek. The wind has been picking up in the local area during Monday afternoon. The fire is proving difficult to contain due to spot fires and flying embers.

There has continuous helicopter activity over the area during Monday.

The NSW Rural Fire Service will be holding Community briefings at the Berowra Oval and Samuel King Park Bobbin Head Road Turramurra at 5.30pm today (Monday).

Tuesday saw continuing helicopter activity. Steady rain has been falling throughout Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The Rural fire service has stated that it is now confident that the fire will be contained.

Pennsylvania Real Estate The Keystone State

Filed in Loan Agreements Leave a comment

By Raynor James

Known as the Keystone State, Pennsylvania is a hard working state. Depending on where you live, Pennsylvania real estate can be reasonable or pricey.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is a state with an incredible amount of history battling with modern tendencies. Historically, the state is the home of such notable locations as Gettysburg and Valley Forge. For scenery, you can experience mountainous areas hosting elegant resort areas and wide open rural areas. In contract, the state is also home to Pittsburg and Philadelphia, two of the hardest working cities in the country.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia is a microcosm of the clash of old and new in Pennsylvania. The first capital of the United States, Philadelphia is a big city with old world charm. The city was the location of the signing of both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and is favorite of history buffs. At the same time, the ‘City of Brotherly Love’ has seen a development and economic resurgence since the 1980s and can be described as an economic powerhouse. As with many big cities, the town has top end attractions with fans being passionate about the Flyers, Eagles, Phillies and 76ers as well as college basketball.

Pittsburg

Once considered the gateway to the West, Pittsburg sits at the meeting of three large rivers. Considered an industrial city because of a long history of steel manufacturing, the city is actually very pleasant and has even been voted the best city to live in by one publication. Today, the steel industry has lessened and the city is vibrant with college students, park areas and an active nightlife.

Erie

Often maligned, Eire is the hidden gem of Pennsylvania. A smallish town on Lake Erie, the town has a relaxed atmosphere, plenty of landscaping and nice beaches. Stretching from the town is huge park, which makes for excellent outdoor activities.

Pennsylvania Real Estate

As you might imagine, Pennsylvania real estate prices are both cheap and expensive depending on the location. A single-family home in Erie will average less than $200,000, while downtown Philadelphia is going to run close to $600,000. Surprisingly, the same home in Pittsburg will cost a very reasonable $250,000.

Pennsylvania real estate seems to mirror the national average for appreciation rates. In 2005, property appreciated at just over 13 percent.
