Quiznos restaurant chain airs controversial commercial

Quiznos, a fast food restaurant chain that specializes in selling submarine sandwiches, has aired a controversial television commercial, with an extended version only appearing in the late-night lineups. The commercial is a promotion for the company’s new sandwich, the ‘Toasty Torpedo’. Bob Sassone, a writer for TVSquad.com, argues that it is homosexually themed and compares it to pornography.

The commercial begins with a toaster oven talking to Scott, a Quiznos sandwich maker, in a male voice. “Scott, I want you to do something,” says the toaster to Scott. As he takes a bite of a Torpedo and appears to look in the direction of his genitals, Scott says to the toaster, “[sic] not doing that again. That burned.” The toaster replies, “We both enjoyed that.”

Later in the commercial, the toaster asks Scott to make one of the sandwiches and says the price of it is “sexy” and then “sexier.” Scott grins and does so. The toaster then asks Scott to “stick it in me”. The sandwich just happens to be 12 inches long, giving the appearance of a special relationship between Scott and the toaster oven.

Quiznos published a press release on March 24 announcing the new line of sandwiches. They stated that their price of US$4 helps to ease the economic pinch. In a statement to Wikinews Quiznos stated that their commercials are within the company’s character and they were designed to get people talking.

“We developed our new ads to be consistent with the Quiznos brand and to get people excited about our new Toasty Torpedoes. Some of the ads are edgy and provocative, but they’re well within the confines of the Quiznos brand character,” said Rebecca Steinfort, chief marketing officer for Quiznos to Wikinews.

“Since Quiznos has a broad range of consumers that eat at its more than 4,500 restaurants nationwide, we tailor our commercials to be relevant and appeal to our diverse customers – all of whom are watching different kinds of programming. The new ads are fun and entertaining, and the edginess and innuendo of the ads are designed to get people talking about our new Toasty Torpedoes, and that’s exactly what we want: people to talk and taste our new sandwiches,” added Steinfort.

Bob Sassone a writer for TVSquad.com, one of the Internet’s top television weblogs, compared the commercial to a pornography film.

“The new Quizno’s commercial is probably the closest we’ll get to a gay porn flick in a mainstream sub shop ad,” Sassone wrote.

In 2007, the company made another controversial commercial. It featured people on the street eating samples of a Quiznos ‘Prime Rib Dinner’ sandwich. They promoted it as having a lot of “meat” and near the end it featured two women eating a sandwich saying, “It’s not lacking any meat. And that’s what real women need”.

“Nevertheless, Quiznos remains committed to providing its customers with high-quality ingredients at everyday lower prices, all with excellent service. As such, we encourage consumers to give feedback on the commercials to our corporate marketing department through the website,” said Steinfort.

US Senate unanimously passes genetic nondiscrimination bill

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Thursday, April 24, 2008

In a unanimous 95-0 vote Thursday, the United States Senate passed a bill that would forbid employers and health insurance companies from discriminating against someone based on information learned through genetic testing.

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, described by Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy as “the first major new civil rights bill of the new century,” will now be sent back to the House of Representatives, where it could be approved as early as next week. President George W. Bush, who would have to sign the bill for it to become law, has voiced his support for the legislation.

The bill forbids employers from firing, refusing to hire, or otherwise discriminating against employees based on genetic information, such as a family history of a hereditary disease. It also makes it illegal for employers to request genetic information of an employee or the employee’s family.

Health insurance companies are also addressed in the bill, which forbids them from requesting genetic information or using such information to set premium rates or determine enrollment eligibility. However, insurance companies would still have the right to base one’s health coverage on the actual presence of a genetic disease.

Americans can now be confident that their genetic information cannot be used by health insurers or employers in harmful or hurtful ways.

“For the first time we act to prevent discrimination before it has taken firm hold and that’s why this legislation is unique and groundbreaking,” said Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, who sponsored the bill along with Sen. Kennedy and Sen. Mike Enzi. Snowe fears the threat of discrimination may discourage people from undergoing genetic testing, which can help to diagnose a wide range of diseases and lead to lifesaving therapy.

Kathy Hudson, director of the Genetics and Public Policy Center, reports that 92 percent are worried that information gained in genetic testing may be used against them. “After a very long wait,” she says, “Americans can now be confident that their genetic information cannot be used by health insurers or employers in harmful or hurtful ways.”

One part of the bill addresses this concern. “Federal legislation establishing a national and uniform basic standard is necessary to fully protect the public from discrimination and allay their concerns about the potential for discrimination,” the bill reads, “thereby allowing individuals to take advantage of genetic testing, technologies, research, and new therapies.”

Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn initially blocked Senate action on the bill, warning that it could potentially lead to excessive lawsuits against employers and insurers. But after changes were made to the bill to ease his concerns earlier this week, he supported the legislation and allowed the Senate to vote on it. “We certainly improved the bill from a liability standpoint,” said Coburn, an obstetrician.

Similar bills were unanimously passed by the Senate in 2003 and 2005, but in both years the bill stalled in the House. The current bill was passed in the House of Representatives a year ago by a 420-3 vote. A genetic nondiscrimination bill was first introduced 13 years ago by New York Representatives Louise Slaughter, who says the House will “get it out to the White House as quickly as we can.”

Planning Your Herb Garden Layout

Filed in Timber Leave a comment

By Paul Courtney

Thankfully, planning the layout of your herb garden is not rocket science nor does it have to be like any of the magnificent garden of the world like Kew Gardens in England or the Longwood gardens in Pennsylvania. These gardens are artificial in nature and require the skill of professional horticulturists to grow and maintain them. Your herb garden layout is much simpler and will not require anywhere near as much work.

A real herb garden needs to still look and grow like they were meant to. Not only will this help the herbs, but will save your back. Let the herbs themselves help you plan your herb garden layout.

What Resources Are Available to You?

Take an honest look at what resources you have for your herb garden layout. If you already have a greenhouse, you have a great place for seedlings or herbs that need a more Mediterranean climate in order to grow, like basil. If you dont have a greenhouse or a large garden plot, away from car exhaust and tons of shade, then dont fret. Just use a simple steel rack and flowerpots in your kitchen or front porch as your portable herb garden layout. An herb garden doesnt have to be all in one patch of ground in order to be a useful, satisfying herb garden.

What Herbs To Grow?

Take a look at what herbs you usually use in your cooking and start from there. Now, if you want to grow mint, you must keep in mind that mint demands a lot of space and will choke any other herbs or flowers growing nearby so it needs to be in a space all on its own. However, herbs like parsley dont mind a little company.

As you can now see you just cant plant herbs willy-nilly into the ground. Thats an herb garden layout thats a recipe for disaster. You have to actually do some homework as to what kind of soil your herb prefers, how far apart it should be from other herbs, how much sunlight it needs, and when its growing season is.

As they say dont run before you can walk. Why not start of with a few hardy herbs such as thyme, parsley, chives and dill until you get the hang of it. Your herb garden layout will vary from season to season as your experience grows and understanding of what plants need to flourish. You will soon start to reap your harvest of fresh organic herbs and your cooking and life will be richer for it.

Canada increases oil production to assist U.S.

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Monday, September 5, 2005

The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board of Alberta, Canada, will increase oil output by between 18,000 and 30,000 barrels a day to help the U.S. in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. This is being done by temporarily suspending limits on oil production. The increase was requested by Alberta’s Premier, Ralph Klein.

The comparatively small size of the increase has led industry analyst Peter Linder to call the increase “more of a token gesture” and a “drop in the bucket” by comparison to normal production levels.

The increase in production levels is temporary, but no date has been set for when the output levels might again be capped. Analysts say that 10% of the U.S. Gulf States‘ oil production was affected by the hurricane.

CFPB records fewer complaints in early days of US government shutdown

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

Unlike some parts of the US Federal Government, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has been open during the federal government shutdown and recording a record-low number of complaints submitted by consumers against mortgage companies, credit card companies, student loan providers, banks, money transfer providers, companies who provide credit reports, and other companies providing consumer loans.

With data not available for yesterday, the first four days of the shutdown had daily totals of 37, 16, 13, and 3 complaints. With the exceptions of September 29 with 15 complaints and September 28 with 23, it is the lowest daily total since March 16 of this year when 36 total complaints were recorded and February 23 of this year with 14. The total complaints are also down from the same dates last year, when the total complaints per day for the first four days of October 2012 were 272, 298, 288, and 225.

Of the 69 filed complaints recorded so far this month, 27 were complaints about mortgage companies, 21 were about bank accounts and 10 were about credit card companies. 40% of credit card companies complaints, 42.9% of bank account complaints and 48.1% of mortgage complaints are currently listed as still in progress. Most of the rest have been closed with an explanation.

Bank of America leads all companies in terms of total complaints filed this month with 9. Bayview Loan Servicing, LLC andJPMorgan Chase have 7 complaints each. Ally Bank, Sovereign Bank, and Wells Fargo have 4 each. Flagstar Bankand Equifax have 3 each. Citibank, Nationstar Mortgage, TD Bank, Amex, and FirstMerit Bank have 2 complaints each. 18 financial services companies have 1 complaint each filed against them.

During the government shutdown, some CFPB staff have voiced their opinions on Twitter. Dan Munz, deputy assistant director for consumer engagement at the CFPB, tweeted, “Boy, shutdown week has really created a sudden bumper crop of amateur federal management experts.”; “Also, seems like Boehner is singlehandedly undoing whatever progress he’d made in portraying this as a Dem [Democratic Party] shutdown.”; and “Basically, there’s now a strong incentive to fill legislation with minor symbolic things you can bargain away later to protect the core.”

The agency has been able to stay open during the government shutdown because it is funded by the Federal Reserve. According to Amanda Terkel at the Huffington Post, Republican members of the United States House of Representatives have put closing the CFPB on their wish list of items in negotiating for a new debt ceiling limit. Party members have previously stalled the appointment of Richard Cordray as the CFPB boss as a way of hindering it from engaging in oversight of financial organizations in the the US.

Top Five Core Strengthening Exercises For Women

Filed in Dentist Leave a comment

By Daniel Clay

The abdominal muscles are referred to as the core muscles since they are central to all the basic activities performed by you. And as women are more fallible to bone and joint disorders than men, it is important for them to concentrate on strengthening the core muscles. However, it is not necessary for them to attend a boot camp to learn these simple exercises. Simple exercises that you could do at home to strengthen your abdominal muscles are listed below.

Crunches

Crunches strengthen the lower, middle and the upper abdominal muscles and hence are considered as one of the best core exercises. Crunches tighten the abdomen muscles and also help you strengthen the various muscles of the abdomen, simultaneously. Interesting variants of crunches have been recommended to enable you to easily strengthen the different sectors of the abdominal muscles. They include the basic crunches, bi-cycle crunches, oblique crunches and the vertical leg crunches.

Drawing In

Another simple core exercise that helps you in reinforcing the abdomen is the drawing-in exercise. This easy exercise is more of a breathing exercise, wherein you suck in the stomach muscles and hold on for few seconds. This exercise is to be repeated a few times for better results.

Plank exercises

The plank exercise in addition to strengthening the abdominal muscle strengthens the back too. This is like doing your push-ups, but here you additionally contract your stomach when the body is raised from the ground level. You are advised to hold on to the contracted position for nearly 30-60 seconds and repeat the exercise about five times, initially.

Side bends

Yet another uncomplicated exercise that you could do with just a dumb-bell is the side bends. By holding a dumb-bell in one hand, here you bend from one side to another simultaneously lowering the dumb=bell to knee height. By repeating the exercise till you feel comfortable, you strengthen your core muscles.

Holding sit-up

The holding sit-up is essentially for the lower abs and is another non-strenuous exercise that results in strengthening of your core muscles. However this is not recommended for women with weak back, as the condition could be aggravated as you raise your shoulder from the ground-level to sitting position.

Tips for abdominal exercises

It is important however to do the exercises regularly to reap the rewards of the exercise. You would not feel the positive effect of the exercises if you do not do these core exercises at least five times a week. But instead of doing every exercise on each day of the week you may choose three to four exercises for every day. You may repeat the exercises a few times at short intervals, without unduly straining yourself.

Apart from the top five core exercises listed above, there are few other equally good exercises that women may have in their repertoire. Exercises like alternate toe-touching, floor cycling, medicinal ball sit-ups, weighted curls with medicinal balls and reverse crunches could be tried out too in rotation. By rotating the effective exercises, you ensure that your exercise schedules do not go stale, but remains entertaining and lively.

Senior Chinese official executed for spying for Taiwan

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Thursday, August 10, 2006

A Chinese government official convicted of working for the Taiwanese government has been executed, and thousands of civil workers viewed the taped trial for “educational purposes” on Monday. The prisoner’s name was Tong Daning and was in his mid-50’s and held a rank just under “Assistant-Minister” before he was found guilty of espionage. According to the anonymous sources, Daning had been selling state sources for over 15 years, making a profit of about US$250,000.

Daning is the highest ranking person executed in China since 1999, when a Major General and Senior Colonel were executed for selling state secrets. China and Taiwan have been spying on each other ever since 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was officially created, but that has not stopped over 1 million Taiwanese citizens from working and investing over 100 billion USD in China. There have been many cases of espionage within the last few years, with all but two resulting in a death sentence.

Individuals, primarily in UAE and Saudi Arabia, are searching for a year-round supply of ready-to-eat means and seasonable food items, which is one of the major drivers responsible for the growth of the GCC food flavors market. The busy lifestyle of people has resulted in an incline towards frozen food products, with a lot of nutritional content. According to the data collected by the UAE government, there has been a rapid boost in the total working population, with a total of 7.38 million labor force in 2018. The frozen and precooked meals, including veg meals, meatballs, and food products, are halal certified, owing to which they are experiencing robust growth across the country. The stimulating residential and hospitality sector, accompanied by the boost in the infrastructure projects such as the Murcia Residential Project, Four Season Jeddah Corniche, Qiddiya City, Neom Business City, and Jabal Omar Projects, will propel the food flavour market share. However, the rising consciousness towards the toxicity levels in pesticides and other health issues will curb the market size.

Origin Type Segment Drivers

On the basis of origin type, natural food flavors are projected to witness a higher CAGR over the forecast period. Natural food flavors are obtained from fruit juice or fruit, spices, vegetable juice, or edible vegetable yeast and provide numerous advantages like additional medicinal properties, decreasing food preparation time, and are nearly effortless. This has strengthened the market growth.

Application Segment Drivers
