Indonesian blackout caused by lack of generation capacity

A power outage in Indonesia that left about 100 million people without electricity has caused a political crisis. The country’s state-owned energy monopoly, PLN, has not determined the immediate cause, and the country’s president has ordered the national intelligence agency and police to investigate.

The blackout appears related to deficiencies in Indonesia’s power generation capacity.

The power failure follows attempts to deal with the country’s growing energy crisis, including conservation and trying to allow private companies to provide energy, which was ruled unconstitutional in 2004. In January, the Indonesian government held a special energy summit to attract investment in their energy infrastructure. At the summit they set the goal of adding 22,000 megawatts to Indonesia’s present capacity of 23,000 megawatts, in order to support the country’s growth.

The World Bank and others have warned that without more investment in the country’s energy infrastructure an energy deficit will result. However, foreign investors remain wary of investing in Indonesia. “The power outage has resulted in worries over an energy crisis which could hurt the nation’s industrial sector,” said a trader on Indonesia’s stock market.[1]

The outage began at 10:23 a.m. local time, August 18, 2005, when power failed along the electrical system that connects Java, Bali, and Madura, causing outages in Java and Bali. Almost half of the country depends on the electrical grid that experienced failures. Some of the main lines on the grid are over 20 years old, according to PLN president Eddie Widiono.

The blackout caused traffic jams in Jakarta, forced cancellation of several international and domestic flights at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, shut down Jakarta’s electric train service, and disrupted hospital operations. Some larger hospitals were forced to delay surgeries while many smaller hospitals could not receive patients. About 1,800 officers were called into action by Jakarta’s metropolitan police to deal with short-term problems caused by the power failure.

Candles used in place of electric lighting started six fires in Jakarta alone.

Mulyo Aji, a PLN official, said more power failures are likely in the future as energy demand increases, without any corresponding new supplies of electricity scheduled to come online soon.

Datacenter Design: Key Components and Sound Strategies

by

Arnie W. Evdokimo

An efficient datacenter design can reduce down-time, increases operational efficiency and cuts maintenance costs. A good design also saves money by eliminating the need to expand or upgrade the facility in the future. Industry analysts report data center managers are looking for solutions to reduce energy costs and increase capacity to extend the facility s useful life.

Key Components of Datacenter Design

For a top performing data center, companies need to look at three key areas:

Equipment. IT equipment accounts for the majority of power consumption. As

datacenter design

focuses more on green options, companies are focusing on energy-efficient hardware and replacing older hardware.

Newer equipment comes equipped with thermostatic fan control. By maintaining equipment so no dust accumulates in intake grills, companies can improve reliability. Data center managers should also ensure cabling is protected and all equipment is positioned to not block exhaust ports. Careful datacenter design can help eliminate equipment operational issues.

Airflow. In proper datacenter design, air should flow from the air conditioning equipment through the IT equipment and back to the air conditioning equipment. However, airflow can take a couple other paths that produce undesirable effects.

One example of improper airflow is when air flows from the air conditioning equipments outlet and back directly to the input. In this situation, the air conditioning equipment does not provide adequate cooling and the total capacity is reduced.

Another case involves the hot exhaust air exiting from IT equipment. The hot air being expelled into the datacenter must be re-circulated through the facility s air conditioner and cooled. However, before it is re-circulated, some of this hot air may be returned to the IT equipment through its air intake vent. The recycling of hot exhaust air in this manner reduces the effectiveness of the air conditioning equipment and puts the IT equipment at risk of not being properly cooled.

Datacenter design needs to manage airflow by isolating hot and cold air. By doing so, companies can save money on cooling. Equipment racks should be configured in such a way to eliminate extra spaces and be aligned in a hot aisle/cold aisle design. Using this design technique ensures equipment air intake comes from a cold aisle and exhaust air is pushed out into a hot aisle.

Temperature. Just as heat can cause major issues, overcooling causes inefficiencies and is a common problem in datacenter design. The hot and cold air separation techniques outlined in the previous section represent the starting point to temperature control. The next step is to thoroughly understand the manufacturer s specifications for each piece of equipment.

By adhering to the temperature requirements listed on data sheets, IT managers can avoid overcooling the facility. By improving energy efficiencies, companies can save money on data center operations.

Developing Sound Strategies for Datacenter Design

When designing or updating a data center, IT managers need to think about their future as well as current needs. Considerations should include company growth and when upgrades are expected. With careful planning and use of sophisticated tools, data center managers can understand equipment, airflow and temperature issues.

An efficient datacenter design can save companies money and ensure systems availability. The first step in reducing energy consumption and emissions is to understand the environment. A high performance data center is not only good for the business, but an environmentally and socially responsible way to manage operations.

United States Army Major General Harold J. Greene was killed yesterday afternoon in an apparent insider or ‘green on blue’ attack at the Marshal Fahim National Defense University on the outskirts of Kabul, Afghanistan. His death marks the first death of a United States general since the September 11th attacks and the first on foreign soil since the Vietnam War. Along with the death of Major General Greene, fifteen others were wounded in the attack including a German brigadier general, eight US soldiers, a number of British soldiers, and three Afghan soldiers.

The attack started during a routine visit, when an individual, reportedly an Afghan National Army soldier, opened fire with a light assault rifle from inside a building, 100 yards (90 meters) away from where Greene and others were standing. Soldiers fired back and killed the attacker. The Pentagon Press Secretary, US Navy Rear Admiral John Kirby, said, “There are a number of casualties as a result of the shooting, perhaps up to 15, to include some Americans”. Kirby added, “Many were seriously wounded. Others received only minor injuries. The assailant was killed.”

An Afghan Defense Ministry spokesperson, General Mohammad Zahir Azimi, said the attacker was a “terrorist dressed in an Afghan army uniform.” The Taliban acknowledged the attack and praised it, but did not claim responsibility for it.

Greene was serving as deputy commanding general of the Combined Security Transition Command – Afghanistan at the time of his death. He was previously Deputy for Acquisition and Systems Management in the office of the United States Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology. Greene joined the Army as an officer in 1980 after graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

In a statement Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno gave his condolences, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Maj. Gen. Harold J. Greene’s family, and the families of our soldiers who were injured today in the tragic events that took place in Afghanistan. These soldiers were professionals, committed to the mission. It is their service and sacrifice that define us as an Army.”

New method of displaying time patented

Filed in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Saturday, October 14, 2006

An American inventor has patented a pair of new time formats with a footprint less than 50% of that of conventional four-digit time. The more unusual of the two new formats, called “TWELV”, dispenses with numerals altogether. In place of clock hands or digits, the new clock uses color to convey the hour and a moon image to convey the minute, which moon slowly grows throughout the course of an hour from a narrow crescent to a full-fledged circle.

The second and more approachable of the new formats retains numerical digits to indicate the minute but uses colors to convey the hour.

Early critics question whether the aesthetic benefits of the moon-clock will be sufficient to encourage users to learn the color-based time-telling system. However, the size advantages of the new system may make it particularly suitable for mobile applications, particularly cell phones, wearable computers, and head-mounted displays.

Wearing Scrub Top And Pants Is Critical For Yourself}

Being a doctor is one of those jobs that goes beyond turning up, marking time and cashing your pay check at the end of the month. It requires absolute commitment and can be a truly exhausting job, and not all the endings are happy. However, it is still a job which attracts many people, and can be genuinely rewarding.

People do this job because it needs to be done and, if you are a good doctor, you can save lives, give people their quality of life back and help countless people turn themselves around. For fulfillment, there are few better jobs just as long as you don’t get unrealistic expectations about saving everyone and curing everything, and realise you do plenty as it is.

One would think that, given the important work a doctor does, that what is on the surface would not matter so much. Why does your external appearance come into the question when it’s your medical abilities that will really matter? Does it really make a difference what you wear so long as the patients are treated in the correct way?

The reason is that a patient needs to have confidence in their doctor. Simply put, if you enter a medical consulting room looking like you wash your scrub tops with dish water, patients will not be confident. In fact, psychologically there can be a serious negative effect from seeing a doctor who appears grubby or dirty in a hospital where reason dictates that everything should be clean.

Hygiene is of vital importance in a hospital. It is a chilling fact that people still to this day can die after sustaining relatively minor injuries as a result of bugs they have picked up in the hospital it is rare, but still possible. A great many doctors will go through their entire careers without actually seeing it happen or knowing anyone who has but this does not comfort some patients

The last thing that any doctor wants is for his or her patients to fear that an infection may come from the person giving care, so it is essential to present yourself in a clean and tidy fashion, and this entails wearing a clean and tidy scrub top. If you take pride in your appearance the patients are more likely to feel that they are getting the best treatment they can hope for.

Your scrub pants are also important, and need to be well fitted as well as clean. Of course what matters most is how you care for your patients and how you treat them, but they will be more responsive to a doctor who gives them confidence.

Make sure when you buy your scrubs pant that you get a pair which fit you well and are easy to keep clean you’re doing an important job out there. Why undersell yourself when the job you are doing could not be done by just anyone? Take care of how you look, and let your natural and learned abilities shine through.

Looking at maintenance records and inquiring on important issues such as if it has been winterized is also crucial.

It also helps to have the bike inspected at an accredited motorcycle repair shop so as to figure out if it has any mechanical problems. A test ride will allow you to check if the brakes work properly or if there are any signs of the brakes pulsating, which would indicate the brake disks are wrapped. Be sure to accelerate through the gears so as to determine if the transmission is smooth and firm. A test drive will also help you notice any weird engine noises, creaking in the suspension or excessive vibrations and it will give you a chance to see how the bike responds to steering.
